Chapter 112: Caring deeply for yours?
"Mom, Dad, she’s lying to you both! This is Lucius’s doing. They’ve presented a fake DNA test—why wouldn’t I be your daughter?" Orabela’s voice wavered with frustration as she placed a hand over her heart, her eyes pleading with them.
"I agree," Lady Agatha said, her expression hardened. "I can’t believe Layla would stoop so low as to forge DNA tests just to take control of the family business and our assets. It’s despicable." Her voice turned cold. "Tear that test up and throw it in the bin. None of us should have anything to do with Layla—like mother, like daughter."
Without a word, Miriam walked out of the ward, her mind reeling. She couldn’t shake the haunting look in Layla’s eyes when she’d confronted her, demanding to know how she could have gone so long without recognizing her own daughter.
"Mom!" Orabela called out, her tone growing sharper as Darius tried to soothe her. "Stay with her—I’ll be right back," he assured her, quickly following after his wife.
Outside, Miriam caught sight of Lucius rushing Layla, unconscious and limp, into a nearby room. Her heart pounded as she hastened her steps, stopping just outside the doorway. She watched Lucius explain to the doctor how Layla had fainted from shock. Miriam’s gaze shifted to the test results still clutched in her hand, then back to Layla. An unexpected emotion stirred within her—a feeling she couldn’t quite name.
"Miriam, let’s go back," Darius said quietly, resting a hand on her shoulder. His eyes followed hers to where Layla lay on the hospital bed, motionless.
"She fainted from shock," Miriam whispered, unable to look away. "But... what if Layla really is our daughter?"
"Don’t be absurd!" Darius snapped, a flash of irritation crossing his face. "We shouldn’t be here. Let’s go before Lucius notices us," he insisted, guiding her away despite the lingering questions in Miriam’s heart.
As they turned to leave, Lucius’s voice cut through the room like a blade. "Stay where you are!" he commanded sharply, his gaze cold and unwavering.
