Chapter 143: A Dreadful Purpose
"Did you see him? That man in the sky with wings of wind?" an old cobbler asked, squinting at the clouds as if expecting to see Igaris again.
"Of course I saw him," replied a butcher as he sharpened his cleaver. "That was no ordinary Diver. He looked like a god descending."
"But gods don’t just show up and claim cities, do they?" muttered a scholar clutching a bag of scrolls. "It’s only a matter of time before the Skadi Empire sends their hounds."
At a nearby tea stall, a young girl tugged on her father’s sleeve. "Papa, is the Overlord a good man?"
Her father hesitated, then answered softly, "I don’t know, sweetie. But he looked fearless. Let’s hope he stays that way. The empire has been extorting us from the very start. Maybe he will the Hero of this Era. The one who will save Earth from their grasp."
"A hero?" The girl muttered in puzzlement. "But he is an Overlord."
"Hahah... He is. And an Overlord always rule over others," the man smiled back.
Across the plaza, two retired guards leaned against a stone wall.
"Tsk, I give him a week," one said, chewing on a sprig of grass. "The Empire will burn this place to the ground."
