Chapter 470: Not possible
Chapter 470: Seraphina
I do not know what possessed me to follow Rylan, but I did. I could not shift into wolf form because I have white fur like my hair—it makes me very noticeable.
So I followed him from behind as he walked into the forest. I thought he was going for a run. He had to be going for a run, because he shifted at some point and ran off in wolf form. I thought I lost him, but I kept searching for him.
I walked for an hour when I saw my mate.
Mymate.
Rylan.
With a pregnant she-wolf. I do not recognize her at all. As Luna, I know all my wolves,it is something in me and this wolf was not one of us. She was from elsewhere.
I watch as she places a hand on Rylan’s naked bicep. I try to rationalize it. It is nothing. I am reading into it.
Rylan does not push her away. Even when she runs her hand down his chest and smacks his penis. And my mate... he’s not repulsed and taking a step back.He laughs and shifts back into wolf form, walking away from her.
No.
No.
No.
Not possible.
Not possible.
I stand frozen behind the trees. My heart is pounding. My hands are shaking. My vision is blurring.
He laughed.
He laughed.
He did not push her away. He did not tell her to stop. He did not even look guilty.
There is no way.
It is not possible.
The mate bond is something that separates us from humans. With a mate bond, you cannot betray your mate.
It does not work like that.
As if to mock me, Rylan walks back in clothes. He takes the she-wolf’s hand and kisses it.
As if mocking me.
I watch from behind the trees.
My heart is pounding. My hands are shaking. My vision is red.
I turn around and walk away. I do not know how far I get. It gets dark. The moon rises. I walk. I do not know where to go, but I find myself back where I saw them. I walk to where they stood, and I notice the wall.
Redmoon?
I walk toward Redmoon. I see it—the paved roads and fancy buildings.
I think wolves that see me say something. I do not know what.
I keep walking.
The roads are smooth beneath my feet. The buildings are tall and clean. The lights are bright. Everything is wrong.
This is not how wolves should live.
This is not how packs should be.
I cannot bring myself to care about that right now. I keep walking, and I find the largest building. I need to know who this she-wolf is.
I do not knock. I open the door.
And would you look at that—there is the she-wolf.
In the Redmoon pack house, walking with a glass of water. She looks at me standing in the door.
"Can I help you?" she says in a foreign accent, with blonde hair, fancy-looking clothes, and a protruding stomach.
I do not respond.
She looks at me. Recognition dawns in her eyes.
"Ah." She sets down her glass on a nearby shell. "Well, this is awkward, isn’t it?"
"Who’s the father?" I ask a question I do not want to know the answer to.
"I am sure you know the answer to that, love."
"It is not possible."
She dramatically looks at herself up and down.
"Afraid it is," she says.
I stare at her.
"No, it is not possible," I repeat.
She looks at me like I have lost my mind. Me? When she is the fucking wolf telling me my mate is the father of her pup?!
I laugh hysterically.
How fucking ironic. I have spent over a decade trying for a child. Praying to the goddess for one. Drinking all sorts of fertility remedies. Despite still being young, despite being mates, I should have a child. And now not only has my mate betrayed our bond, their union has fucking resulted in a pup?
I laugh even harder at the fucking irony of it all.
My laugh echoes off the walls. I cannot stop. I see someone come down the stairs. I see it is Elara. She looks between me and the foreign wolf, and looks slightly panicked.
Oh. So she knew.
I look at the wolf in front of me, who is taking a step backward.
"Seraphina, no!!!"
I am on her. Claws out.
I see red. I just want the wolf in front of me dead—her and her disgraceful pup. There is blood on my arms.
She is saying something beneath me. I cannot hear her. I cannot hear anything except the roaring in my ears.
Someone tries to pull me off.
"DON’T TOUCH ME!!!" I scream.
I am pushed off.
I stumble back. My claws are still extended. My chest is heaving. My vision is still tinted red.
I look up.
Standing in front of me, calm as still water, is Elara’s mate.
"Yeah," she says, her voice flat and unimpressed. "That whole wolf bloodline thing does not work on me."
Only then do my eyes become clear.
I look at my claws. Blood is dripping off them onto the pristine tile floor. Red droplets splatter across the white surface like a grotesque painting.
I look around.
People are staring at me. Their eyes are wide. Their faces are pale. They are looking at me like I am a monster.
Me?
I am the one who was betrayed.
Why are they looking at me like this?
I look back at the wolves watching me. They are Redmoon wolves. They are not my pack. They do not know me.
But they are looking at me like I am something dangerous. Something broken. Something that needs to be put down.
I look at Elara’s mate. She is still standing there, calm and steady. Her dark eyes are unreadable.
"You need to leave," she says.
