Chapter 1689 - 1683: Settling Privately with Money
"What exactly happened? Can you explain it clearly? If not, come with me for a bit, we can talk it over once you’ve calmed down."
Tan Jing had no fondness for Li Jun, so she wasn’t very polite in her speech.
Having been reprimanded like that, Li Jun actually sobered up a bit and wasn’t as panicked as before.
"Jingjing, he assaulted people. My friends and I were driving peacefully on the road when he stopped us, then attacked us in the street, beating up my friends like this. If you had come any later, I might not even be able to speak right now."
Once he was somewhat clear-headed, Li Jun immediately turned the accusation back on Chen Yang.
"Are you serious? Is that really how it happened?"
After hearing what Li Jun said, Tan Jing’s brow immediately furrowed.
She clearly didn’t quite believe what Li Jun was saying.
"Really! Everything I said is true. Jingjing, you should restrain him quickly; he’s very capable and could hurt someone." Li Jun nodded without hesitation, affirming his statement.
Tan Jing naturally didn’t believe what Li Jun was saying, but since this was an official matter, she couldn’t blatantly show partiality.
She had to follow procedure and go ask Chen Yang according to regulations.
Though he was falsely accused, Chen Yang was not in a hurry to explain anything.
This was broad daylight on a public road; could he really be falsely accused?
"That’s not how it happened at all. There’s a dashcam in my car; once you look at it, you’ll know what really happened." Chen Yang said calmly.
"Okay."
Upon hearing about the dashcam, Tan Jing didn’t ask any further questions and immediately called over a bespectacled police officer who looked like a technician to investigate the dashcam.
Seeing someone go to investigate the dashcam, Li Jun’s face immediately turned unnatural.
In his earlier panic, Li Jun’s counter-accusation was far from thorough.
Once they check the dashcam, the truth will quickly be uncovered.
"Jingjing, maybe this is just a misunderstanding, and since we all know each other, how about we let this go and end it here?"
Realizing his own weakness in the situation, Li Jun was eager to brush things under the rug before the investigation results came out.
Tan Jing, being specialized in this field, had a keen sense of observation.
She could easily see that something was amiss.
"How could that be fair? With the injuries your friends sustained, even if you’re indifferent, someone needs to give them a fair explanation." Tan Jing righteously rejected Li Jun’s suggestion.
Hearing Tan Jing’s words, Li Jun felt incredibly bitter.
What kind of fair explanation is that? If the truth were to come out, it would only be more detrimental to them.
"Jingjing, it’s just a misunderstanding; there’s no need to make it ugly. I think we can resolve this. Although we were injured, we’re not blameless. I’ll cover the medical expenses; let’s leave it at that." Li Jun said bitterly.
Though Tan Jing noticed problems, she indeed didn’t want things to get too messy, so she glanced at Chen Yang and said to Li Jun, "You can reconcile if you want, but both parties have to agree. If even one side disagrees, I can’t mediate this as an ordinary incident."
Tan Jing’s words took an official tone, meaning Li Jun should negotiate with Chen Yang to see if he’s willing to settle privately.
If he’s willing, then fine.
If not, then the situation has to be handled by normal procedure.
"This..."
Li Jun understood what Tan Jing meant, but became quite apprehensive.
He had to go and talk to Chen Yang to hope for a settlement, despite the conflict between them.
How humiliating.
But to avoid further trouble, he had no other choice.
"Alright."
After weighing the pros and cons, Li Jun finally decided to compromise.
"Chen Yang, how about we settle this privately? You haven’t lost anything; I’ll cover my friends’ medical expenses." Li Jun said to Chen Yang, gritting his teeth a bit.
Li Jun thought he was showing a lot of sincerity by doing this.
After all, his side suffered the serious injuries, and the follow-up medical expenses certainly wouldn’t be cheap.
But in Chen Yang’s eyes, this was completely shameless behavior.
Their people had blocked the road forcibly and a group attacked Chen Yang.
What kind of behavior is this?
In a severe context, this could land them several years of jail time.
Now they wanted a settlement without offering any concessions? And with an unapologetic attitude on top? How could that be acceptable?
"You think too highly of yourself, Li Jun. If this gets serious, you’ll be looking at several years in jail, and you think a simple promise to cover medical fees is enough? It’s impossible."
Without giving it a second thought, Chen Yang shook his head and firmly refused, not willing to let Li Jun off so easily.
Li Jun’s face turned ashen.
He was aware of the complexity of the situation if it got serious, which is why he swallowed his pride and spoke kindly to Chen Yang.
"So what do you want? Can you give me a straightforward answer about the settlement?" Li Jun stared intensely at Chen Yang, gritting his teeth in frustration.
Chen Yang, however, appeared calm and relaxed.
After pondering briefly, he finally laid out his conditions.
"What I want depends on how sincere you are." Chen Yang said with a smile.
Li Jun wasn’t dumb; he naturally understood what kind of sincerity Chen Yang meant.
"Fifty thousand, and this will be settled." Li Jun said.
Chen Yang laughed in disbelief.
"Fifty thousand? Are you joking? Aren’t you usually quite extravagant? Why so stingy now?" Chen Yang teased.
Li Jun was boiling with anger.
Fifty thousand indeed wasn’t much, but he still had to cover subsequent medical expenses, which would be quite a significant outlay.
"Flat price, two hundred thousand, and this matter is over!" Li Jun offered through gritted teeth.
Chen Yang wasn’t really interested in the money; he just wanted to make things difficult for Li Jun.
Seeing that the offered price was the highest Li Jun could manage, Chen Yang decided not to push for more.
"Two hundred thousand is fine, but you have to transfer it right away, or the deal’s off." Chen Yang said with a smile.
"Fine."
Li Jun agreed through clenched teeth and then made the transfer in front of Tan Jing.
Once the transfer was successful, the matter was considered settled privately.
At that moment, the officer investigating the dashcam returned: "Captain Tan, the investigation has clarified that it was—"
"No need to report it; we’ll discuss it once back at the station. It’s settled here and the situation has been resolved." Tan Jing interrupted without letting him finish.
"Alright."
The officer agreed and turned to assist others with moving the injured.
"Since it’s settled, Li Jun, you should get busy. Your friends are seriously injured and delaying treatment could lead to major issues." Tan Jing said to Li Jun.
"What about you, Jingjing? Aren’t you coming back to the county with me?"
Even at this moment, Li Jun was still trying his luck with Tan Jing, speaking as if they were quite close.
"I’m conducting official duties. Once you’re gone, I still have to handle the aftermath. Besides, I’m not familiar with you." Tan Jing replied sternly with a frown.
Her harsh words left Li Jun a bit awkward, and with nothing else to say, he just nodded and left.
After watching Li Jun leave, Tan Jing’s expression immediately lightened, as if a heavy winter had given way to spring.
