However, the fire chief had no choice but to ignore it, pretending not to know. He had received an enormous donation under the condition that they tolerate the troublesome young master for just one year. He was promised the latest fire trucks and equipment, things he had long coveted. Who could resist such a sweet temptation?
The staff felt the same way. They were angry that someone was coming in so easily, having skipped the long, difficult process they themselves went through. But after a year, once the reward was received, they would understand and forgive the chief.
Still, it was hard to understand why Miller would spend such a large sum just for his son’s idle project. But of course, it was possible because of his immense wealth. A common person like him would never dream of doing something like this.
Even Ashley Miller, who had no compassion for others, seemed to care deeply for her child.
The fire chief had spoken to his staff, but as he thought more about it, an unpleasant feeling twisted inside him. Still, he had no choice but to bear with it. After all, the saying “just hold out for one year” applied to him as well.
Clearing his throat, the fire chief picked up the papers in front of him and made a show of scribbling on them.
“I’ve heard about it from Congressman Miller. Still, there are some basic procedures to go through, so I’ll need to ask a few questions. Is that alright?”
“Yes, of course.”
This had already been discussed in advance. It was just a formality, but it couldn’t be skipped. They couldn’t afford to have someone accuse them of illegal activity later.
The fire chief cleared his throat once more, straightened his posture, and looked at the man before him.
“Introduce yourself. Tell me who you are.”
“My name is Grayson Miller.”
