Chapter 444: Before the Invasion
A new war tent stood in the emptiness of the Dimensional Crack. It was not cloth and rope in the traditional sense, but something woven from shadow itself, vast, anchored into the fractured ground by spears of blackened energy. Inside, the space was far larger than it had any right to be, stretching into a dim expanse lit by slow-burning violet braziers. A massive table dominated the center, its surface formed from hardened darkness, shifting subtly to reflect terrain, distances, and presences across the dimension.
Arthur stood at its head.
His ashen hair falling past his shoulders, violet eyes calm and distant, around him stood his marshals, each one a force in their own right,
Arthur’s gaze swept across them once.
"Speak."
It was not a request.
Beru was the first to step forward, "We crush them, my king. This is the only way to approach this." He was simple and direct.
His claws flexed, a faint hiss escaping him.
"They gather together, yes? Good. We descend upon them before they scatter, overwhelm them with numbers, drown them in shadow before they can act."
Ultra tilted his head slightly, his tone calm but firm.
"That assumes they will allow themselves to be cornered."
His eyes glowed faintly.
"They’ve already demonstrated restraint. They are thinking beyond brute force."
H’El stepped in next,
"They will avoid direct confrontation unless they are forced, If we press too aggressively, we risk walking into a prepared counter."
Galatea pushed herself off the table slightly, folding her arms as she spoke, her tone carrying a hint of amusement.
"So we don’t rush them. We control the battlefield instead. Spread our forces, limit their movement, force them into engagements they can’t win, piece by piece."
Her eyes flickered toward Arthur.
"They’ll make mistakes eventually."
Arthur said nothing.
Igris, who had remained silent until now, finally stepped forward.
"My liege."
Arthur’s gaze shifted to him instantly.
"They may not attack us at all."
That drew a slight shift in the room.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed a fraction.
"Explain."
Igris inclined his head slightly, his tone as steady as ever.
"They have already seen your strength. They know direct engagement carries a big risk without the help of a stronger ally. So they will seek to change the battlefield."
Arthur’s gaze did not leave him.
"...By going around us."
Igris met that gaze without wavering.
"They may target Earth instead."
The words settled heavily.
Arthur’s expression darkened.
"Earth is protected," he said after a moment, "The Shadow Lanterns are stationed there and Nyx remains watching."
His gaze flickered briefly, distant for a fraction of a second.
"The Justice League is present as well. They are... useful."
Igris did not argue, Instead, he took another step forward.
"That is true, my liege."
Then
"In the case of a single Monarch attacking... they may hold. But what if it is not a single Monarch?"
The question lingered.
Arthur didn’t respond immediately.
Igris continued.
"If they commit to a full-scale invasion to provoke us..."
His voice remained calm, but the implication behind it was not.
"They will draw us there,"
Beru’s claws tightened slightly.
"And we will respond," Igris finished. "Because we have to."
A silence followed.
Arthur exhaled slowly, stepping back from the table, his boots making no sound against the ground.
"...That is... a good point."
"We already know what they are," he continued, his tone cooling slightly. "Prideful. Arrogant. And cowards when it suits them."
He turned slightly, beginning to walk, the shadows beneath his feet shifting with each step.
"They won’t meet us head-on. Not unless they believe they’ve secured the advantage."
His eyes darkened faintly.
"And they can access my Earth whenever they want..."
The words trailed off,
He moved away from the table, toward the open edge of the tent where the vast, broken horizon of the Dimensional Crack stretched endlessly outward.
"I’ll think about it."
It wasn’t dismissal.
Behind him, none of the marshals spoke.
Arthur stood there in silence, his gaze fixed on the distance,
’If I divide my forces further...’
The thought formed cleanly.
’I give them an opening.’
His army was vast, overwhelming even but it was not infinite in function. Every split, every deployment, every decision was important in this war.
’I can’t afford to be careless with them.’
His eyes narrowed slightly.
’I may be stronger than most of them... but that doesn’t make me untouchable. And I won’t drag Earth into this...’
For a moment, nothing moved.
Then
The shadows behind him stirred, conceptually.
Arthur closed his eyes briefly.
And in that moment, his entire army unfolded within his awareness.
And then,
The system answered.

Arthur stood there, eyes open now, the faint glow returning, but something behind it had changed.
’If they strike Earth...’
His army responded instantly in his mind, formations shifting, paths unfolding, outcomes branching one after another.
’Dividing the army further weakens my pressure here.’
The numbers were overwhelming, but not limitless in function.
’Leaving Earth exposed is not an option.’
His jaw tightened slightly.
’Reinforcing Earth too heavily gives them the opening they want here.’
Arthur finally spoke. "Igris is right, all I have to do now is wait."
"Bellion is going to finish his task," Arthur continued, as if assembling reality into sequence. "The demonic specters will be added to our forces soon enough."
A faint pause followed,
"Then we will see if they truly intend to strike Earth."
The mention of Earth changed everything to Arthur, "I cannot rely on the Shadow Lanterns alone," he said. "And the Justice League, for all their capability, are not prepared to face a Monarch-class invasion at full scale."
His eyes narrowed slightly as he continued, "The Hunters will not change that outcome either. Not against Monarchs, the strongest of the hunters will be useless against their strongest lieutenants."
Arthur exhaled slowly,
"This is not how I wanted to approach this."
"It would have been far better if that bastard Antares had been present here."
A subtle shift passed through him at the mention, his gaze lifted slightly, toward the open violet skies.
"I would not hesitate as much, I get to kill him and the others will be easy targets."
His voice dropped just slightly,
"...Where the hell are you and what are you preparing to do.."
