Chapter 1984 - 1985: Old Mrs. Zhang’s Rebirth in the ’70s—Transforming Ungrateful Children 16
Zhang Yu and Li Juan were already awake and were really disappointed when they heard no movement from outside.
Upon hearing their brother calling out to Wei Dazhi, they had a glimmer of hope. If they could persuade the old father, that would be something.
But then they heard Wei Dazhi speak those words, and Zhang Yu closed his eyes, "Oh right, I was being silly. I totally forgot that whenever my mom makes a decision, my dad never opposes it."
"So we really need to find a place." Li Juan no longer dared to hope for things to go back to how they were before; she just hoped they could continue living here.
"Do you think your work unit can allocate a house?" Li Juan knew there was little hope from her hospital because she joined through replacement. According to the rules, she had to wait until others were allocated before it would be her turn for a house.
The machinery factory allocates houses, and Zhang Yu gave a helpless smile. "Even though we both work, we’re not in the same factory. Look, in the alley, there are many couples married for years and have children older than our son, both working in the factory, yet there’s a big group still waiting for houses."
How Zhang Yu wishes to have their own house, but the truth is they simply can’t wait, "There are too many people ahead waiting for houses."
"These past years, there’s been upheaval here and upheaval there. The leaders are worried that building houses will bring trouble once known to higher-ups, so now they’ve stopped building houses altogether."
"Just counting on the few houses held by logistics." Zhang Yu really held no expectations.
Sigh, Li Juan sighed helplessly, "Yeah, finding a house is really difficult now."
"What if we can’t find a house..." Right, if they couldn’t find a house, wouldn’t they just stay here? Li Juan’s eyes suddenly lit up.
Zhang Yu’s eyes lit up when he heard his wife say this.
"That’s right, Dad, is Mom really going to kick the third brother’s family out?" Wei Jiang remembered what Zhang Yu said last night but didn’t know whether Old Mrs. Zhang had changed her mind overnight.
Zhang Yu and Li Juan listened to the eldest brother’s question, pricking their ears to hear how the old man would answer.
Wei Dazhi glanced at the door to the third brother’s room, knowing that even though there was no noise, they must be hiding behind listening.
"The third brother’s wife has already pointed fingers and cursed at my wife, so why let her continue living at home?"
"To continue upsetting my wife?"
"They’re living in my house without spending their money, and dare to act this way? What about later, after I retire, will they treat us as freeloaders, speaking unbearably?"
"At that point, they might even drive us out. In that case, it’s better to get rid of them from the beginning."
"Living in our house, being so arrogant." Wei Dazhi generally doesn’t speak lightly, but when he does, he doesn’t hold back.
"Wei Jiang, I’m warning you, if you or your wife ever do anything to upset my wife, you’ll see the third brother’s outcome—you’ll be kicked out immediately."
"Don’t think I’m bluffing. I’m serious; I have three children, whoever is good to us will get the house."
"What, three?" Wei Jiang had always thought it was just between the brothers competing for the house or the room their parents lived in.
Now, they realized they might not have any house at all. "Dad, I’m your son and have given you a grandson. How can you, how can you..."
"Why isn’t there a piece of the house for me?" Unhappy, truly unhappy, Wei Jiang looked at Wei Dazhi discontentedly.
Wei Dazhi wasn’t daunted at all, "With your attitude towards me and your mother, eager to say we’re dying, you don’t see us as your parents, so why should we give the house to you?"
"Also, have your mother and I ever wronged you?"
"In this alley, your mother may not be the best mother-in-law, but she’s at least among the best, yet you treat her like this."
"The daughter-in-law curses the mother-in-law, and the son listens. It’s only because your mother endures that they aren’t kicked out on the spot."
"If you believe your wife’s words, then join her family." Wei Dazhi angrily added, "Anyway, within a month you must move out."
"If you have nowhere to live, then stay under a bridge."
"At the time of cursing the mother-in-law, why didn’t you think of the consequences, just assuming we wouldn’t do anything, huh." Wei Dazhi snorted coldly again, then turned around to go to work.
"This is a mess." Zhang Yu sweated profusely, "We must find a house, or else we really will have to live under a bridge."
"You know, you could’ve said it inside instead of out. See, now it’s all messed up." Zhang Yu felt really bad thinking about the extra expenses they would soon incur.
"And the worst part is, the old man said whoever is filial among the three of us will get the house."
Li Juan’s face turned pale; she knew Zhang Yu was almost certainly unhappy with her. Though she always complained that living in the siheyuan wasn’t as convenient as an apartment, at least they had a place.
The key is that there is a mother-in-law here to help with the child, so there’s some care. But now everything’s ruined—not only are they being driven from the home, but their inheritance is likely not theirs.
Wait a minute, did her husband say three brothers earlier? "Is Wei Xuan not a married daughter?"
"How can she come back to fight over the inheritance?" If it were Wei Jiang, Li Juan wouldn’t be so surprised, as he’s a son and the eldest.
But why would a married daughter fight for a house with them? Li Juan felt very indignant.
"Why? Because she’s dissatisfied with us." Is Zhang Yu not angry? But what can be done, "Believe it or not, if the three of us aren’t filial to our parents, who knows who’ll get the inheritance."
For some reason, Zhang Yu suddenly recalled what his parents jokingly said a long time ago, which at the time he dismissed as scare tactics, thinking they wouldn’t actually do it.
But now, thinking back, nothing is impossible, "Maybe it’ll end up with my dad’s apprentice or something."
Zhang Yu knew the old man had several apprentices who visited every holiday and lent a hand when there were issues.
"No way." Li Juan had been angry about the married daughter getting to fight for the family’s house, but now she’s shocked by an even more explosive revelation.
Li Juan thought it increasingly impossible, "Leaving it to the daughter itself is quite exaggerated, but how could they possibly leave the inheritance to outsiders when they have children and grandchildren?"
Li Juan just wanted to say, "They must be out of their minds, not worried about having no one to care for them later."
Zhang Yu laughed, "Since we don’t care for them, they can choose whoever’s nice to them."
Zhang Yu took a deep breath, "This is the pressure they’re putting on us."
