Chapter 57: Ominous threat
The next day, Jia took a short trip down the hospital to meet Wu Yue, who had now regained her consciousness.
"How are you feeling now, Miss. Wu?"
She weakly nodded her head. "It’s still...painful though..."
"Don’t worry. The doctors are here to give you the best treatment."
"Thank you, Inspector..."
Jia asked with a touch of softness to her tone, "Is it okay if I ask you some questions?"
She pressed her lips and indicated her agreement with a slight nod.
"Thank you, Miss. Wu," she smiled. "First, I would like to tell you that we have caught Wang Lei. He confessed to attacking you."
Tears pooled in her eyes, remembering that night. "I was scared..." she hoarsely said, "You were doubting me of Mrs. Dai’s murder and also...I wanted to stop with this addiction. Grandma...came to know," she burst into quiet sobs, "Maybe, it’s because I disappointed her that she passed away...That’s why I wanted to stop..."
"Don’t blame yourself, Miss. Wu. I am sure your grandmother who loved you so much would have wanted to understand your reasons instead of feeling disappointed."
A quiet, regretful sigh broke free her lips. "I just g-got into some bad company," she choked. "I felt the pressure of trying out something new...I didn’t want to, but I couldn’t be firm. Then there was the exam stress too," she sniffled. "Grandma was a teacher and I was afraid that a granddaughter of s-such a good teacher would fail her. I had been performing badly in my tests for a while and I was afraid of my important entrance exam coming up...It was just too much to take..."
