Chapter 320: Dirty Cops
After work, Yohan drove Mia and Remi down to Helen’s house.
It took a while before she appeared.
"You’re already here." She collapsed onto the couch and let out a small exhale.
"Yeah, what’s up with you?" Yohan asked, noticing she looked more tired than usual.
She raised her head and looked around. "Where are Mia and Remi?"
"They went to the grocery store to get some things... what happened?"
Helen paused for a bit.
"Today... I walked into a meeting between the commissioner of police and Mayor Grant. They were talking about the incident with Hatoru."
"The commissioner?" Yohan repeated. "Does that mean they were all working together?"
"At this point it’s obvious that’s the case, but the real issue came after the meeting."
She told it exactly as it happened. The commissioner had called her back into his office.
It was only the two of them, and this time he didn’t ask any questions. He simply handed a file over to her.
"Open it," he said with sinister calm.
As she pulled out the papers, she saw a detailed report of almost everything that had led up to Hatoru’s death.
"This was the statement given by Simon Red. What do you think?"
Helen took a few seconds to scan through it.
"Why didn’t he submit this statement?" she finally asked.
"You shouldn’t worry about that. What I want to know is why you gave a completely different story. You made no mention of the boy called Yohan."
"That’s because I have no information concerning a person like that." Helen stood her ground and continued to play dumb.
Seeing this, the man leaned back.
"We both know that’s bullshit, so why don’t we cut to the chase?"
He continued, "I know that you have some kind of relationship with this kid, to the extent that you even agreed to house his workers."
Helen was a bit surprised by that last part. She pulled out the other papers in the envelope. They had Mia and Remi’s faces on them, along with information about them and their relationship with Yohan.
"I know it all ties back to that boy, and you of all people should know that it wouldn’t be difficult to get him in trouble."
"Commissioner, I—"
"Save it. I also know you’ve been investigating me for almost a year now. How has it been? Have you been able to find anything?"
Helen was stunned, but she tried not to show it.
"Where are the cameras?" The commissioner glanced from side to side, his mustache dancing above his mouth.
"Come on, there’s no need to pretend. You know I’ve let you carry out this little investigation just so I could catch your interest. The truth is that..."
"I love you, Helen!" The man straightened himself and announced.
"I am willing to do anything for you, even leave my wife and family if that’s what you want."
Helen was now on a whole different level of shock. He tried to place his hand on hers, but she pulled away.
"I didn’t think this would come as much of a shock to you. I’ve always taken good care of you, and I intend to continue if you agree to be my woman."
Helen didn’t know what to say. The sudden confession was just too overwhelming, especially coming from a man that looked so out of shape.
"I apologize, but I have no interest in entering any relationship at the moment," she said, not bothering to hide her disgust,
"Even if I did, it wouldn’t be with a married man who’s a dirty cop... the worst kind of criminal."
"We’re all dirty cops, Helen. You’re covering for that boy when you know what he did," the man said with a chuckle.
"That’s different..." She muttered.
"Why? Is it because he’s good-looking?" he asked sounding a bit playful.
"Okay, you can keep him around if that’s what you want. I just want one thing in return."
"What is it?" she wondered with a bit of hesitation.
"Hatoru’s toll ledger. It was missing when our boys got there, so I suspect your friend might know where it disappeared to. If you can get me that ledger, I’ll leave you and your little friends alone."
"I’m only giving you this option because of how I feel about you, and I hope you accept it. If not, it would be difficult for me to protect you."
Even without the seriousness in his voice Helen knew that this was an actual threat and he wasn’t just talking about her job here, he was referring to the lives of Yohan and the people around her.
Helen didn’t bother saying anything else. Even with all her investigation, she couldn’t get anything solid enough to send the commissioner to prison.
He was always extremely careful and had almost every police officer at the station in his pocket. They had long since lost their sense of justice, treating his every word as law.
"Why don’t you think it over? If you agree to work with me, you’ll be far richer than you can ever imagine."
Helen told Yohan everything that had happened, leaving him deep in thought.
"If the ledger really is missing, there’s only two people who could have taken it."
"I was thinking the same thing," Helen agreed. "Any idea where your other friend went off to?"
"Not really, but It definitely was most likely Jenna or Izumi."
"Izumi?" Her brows went up "I was thinking Simon."
"Yeah, it could also be him, but I doubt it. If he had it, they wouldn’t be asking you for it."
"What if he is also hiding it from them?"
"I doubt it. Jenna once told me that Hatoru kept it close to him at all times. If we take that literally, he might have had it on him when he died."
"And the first person to interact with the body was Izumi." Helen was also starting to understand.
"But why would she do that? Did she even know what it was?"
"Probably, where did you take her that day?" Yohan wondered.
"Nowhere. She told me she would stay at her father’s friend’s place. I tried asking about it and insisted she come home with me, but she refused."
"I don’t know anything about that, but maybe Jenna might have an idea."
"I thought you said you didn’t know where she was?" She pointed out.
"I don’t but she’ll definitely reach out to me,"
"I wonder what kind of relationship you have with her to be so sure..." Helen teased, a hint of curiosity in her voice.
"It’s not like that..." Yohan replied with an awkward laugh, trying to brush the question aside.
