Chapter 73 Wedding Countdown (2)_1
Seeing him snatch the soldiers’ duty to stand guard and escape from her, Ruby Bluen felt a tinge of bitterness in her heart. She silently stepped forward, took off the military coat she was wearing, and gently placed it on Marcel Horne’s shoulders.
Marcel Horne did not move, so she went ahead and fastened the first button of the coat to prevent it from falling to the ground. Then she took a deep look at Marcel Horne, who stood still like a statue, before turning away and quietly leaving.
As she turned to leave, a complex mix of emotions flickered through the cold blackness of Marcel Horne’s eyes.
When the sky is about to change, no one can predict it.
By the afternoon, the sun slowly and imperceptibly hid behind the clouds, and the not-so-dark cloud cover took over the sky of T City. Everyone failed to notice, assuming it was just sunny turning to overcast, especially since the autumnal season generally meant reduced rainfall. Unexpectedly, not long afterward, it began to rain. The downpour wasn’t heavy—just showers—but it was accompanied by strong winds. This brought a chill to many people still wearing short-sleeved shirts, reminding them that fall was ending and winter’s door was about to open.
Emerald Garden Building was situated on the right side of Betra Street in T City. It was a residential building constructed in the early nineties. After more than a decade, the original residents, who had become wealthy, moved out. The emptied building, however, did not lose its value; its owners rented it out to incoming migrant workers. In this developed metropolis, both land and rental prices were particularly expensive. For an old building like Emerald Garden Building, the monthly rent for a single suite was five hundred yuan. Including utilities, this amounted to at least six or seven hundred yuan per month. Compared to other areas, however, this was considered cheap. Consequently, it was popular with the working class, and the entire eighteen-story building was fully rented out.
Although Rachel Bailey had worked in the Finance Department at Cosmos Group for over three years and her salary was not low, she was naturally thrifty and always tried to save some money. Unlike her colleagues who lived in upscale housing, she rented a suite here at Emerald Garden Building. The original rent was five hundred yuan, but after much haggling, she ground the landlord down, and he eventually agreed to charge her only four hundred yuan in rent.
Having lost her job in defense of her best friend, she refused Julia Bluen’s offer of help and did not wish to become a pawn for major companies to use. So, these past few days she had been thinking about what kind of business she might start. That morning, she had even gone out to survey the market. After returning at noon and preparing a simple meal for herself, she took a short rest, only to wake up to find that it had started raining.
