Alina was still catching her breath when — pop! — the same woman reappeared beside her so suddenly that Alina nearly squeaked. She clutched her chest dramatically. "Goodness — you scared me!"

The elder staff didn’t bat an eye. "Principal Nightshade approves. You may take Class D. Be mindful near the water."

And just as quickly as she came, the woman disappeared again, her dark uniform blending into the corridor’s shadows like a ghost in broad daylight.

I will never get used to that, Alina thought, shaking her head with a tiny laugh. She stepped back into her classroom.

She clapped her hands once, just loud enough to get all their attention. "Guess what, sweethearts?" she said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "We’re going on a small adventure to the lake!"

There was a tiny heartbeat of silence and then a squeal of excitement. Drake’s tail thumped his desk so hard it rattled. Luna’s ears perked high, her eyes glinting like a happy pup. Boo floated upside down, spinning in the air with glee, and even Lucian lifted his head, one tiny brow raised in quiet interest. Kelpie’s eyes lit up too.

Tiny feet began to shuffle. Alina bit back her giggle, pressing her fingers to her lips.

"Alright! Get your boats and line up nicely. Teacher will lead the way!" Alina called out, her voice bright and warm like sunlight spilling across their little heads.

At once, the classroom erupted into the sweetest, tiniest chaos. Tiny hands grabbed their paper boats — some boats got squished, Boo dropped his and caught it mid-air with a proud grin, and Luna growled at Vlad Jr. when he dared peek at hers. But in the end, every baby was lined up like chubby ducklings behind their gentle human teacher.

Alina walked backward a few steps, counting them softly — one, two, three... all nine here. Her heart squeezed at how happy they looked, with their eyes wide with excitement for their first little adventure outside the classroom.
