Chapter 332: _A Snake On The Table
Elian’s POV
*****
"So, uhm... What’s the agenda for today?" He stretched his limbs when he, Lucian and Kyren walked out of the room after freshening up.
Trying to pretend the system hadn’t slapped him with the most traumatising mission ever.
[Instead of mentally whining, I’d start plotting the best and fastest ways to get pregnant if I were you.]
[Lucian is an Alpha King now. A new one. Which means he’s going to be much busier, especially with the unpredictability of Arcadia and the High Matron threatening the continent.]
"Well, Elian," Lucian wrapped his arms around his shoulders while Kyren gave them a side eye, most of his attention glued to his communication bracelet. "First, breakfast. Then immediately after we’re going to have a meeting with the top noble families of Lunaria."
[Told you so.]
Elian’s jaw tightened, eyes sliding to Kyren.
The Rogue king was busy typing something into a holographic screen, his crimson orbs squinted into slits.
Then, "You’re wondering what I have planned, little flame?"
Without waiting for Elian’s response, he lowered his arm, turning his head to him. "Well, I’m currently keeping tabs on Arcadian activity. Something is off. For days now, their military has been converging closer to the capital."
Huh.
That was odd.
"You have eyes on an entire nation’s military?" Lucian made a surprised sound. "No wonder my father and the councils were always cautious with you."
Kyren snorted as they got in front of an Ascension platform. "Spare me the flattering. It’s simply information my soldiers Runecrest gathered. It helps that it’s a coastal city."
Oh, that’s right.
The Rogue king took control of an Arcadian city some days ago.
"What about the civilians?" Elian was curious as they entered the lift. "Do you still... Have nothing to do with them? What if they start an uprising against your soldiers?"
Both Kyren and Lucian gave short laughs, making Elian’s cheeks heat up.
"Ah, little flame," Kyren ruffled his hair, a cunning smirk on his face. "Don’t fret. As we speak my plans for those civilians are already in motion."
Something about the way he said that gave Elian a bad feeling.
Welp. At least, he wasn’t killing innocent witches.
Hopefully.
Lucian clicked a button on the metal walls, causing the runes to light up with a soft blue light.
Next stop... The dining room.
.
.
Before they reached the archway leading into the dining room, Elian already picked up the sounds of chairs shifting and voices chattering.
Aurora, Sylas, Elowen and Seraphyne were probably already there.
[Uhm... I don’t think you’ll like the other person my scanners are picking up.]
Elian’s brows furrowed, his head barely moving to acknowledge the greetings of a few maids who walked past them. ’Why? Who is it?’
[Well—]
"I appreciate your acceptance, your majesty." A silvery female voice broke through the activities in the room, making Elian’s eyes narrow. "I promise, I’ll do everything in my power to put my brother to stop my brother’s evil. And help the Alpha King’s rule."
Elian and Lucian exchanged knowing glances while Kyren sniggered softly.
The moment they got to the dining room, the suspicion was confirmed.
Estella.
She sat beside Lucian’s mother, who sat at the opposite end of the long table, her head lowered and her lush blonde hair tied back.
Meanwhile, Aurora, Seraphyne and Sylas sat at the opposite side of the table, the girls seeming like they were seconds away from reaching out and grabbing her throat.
While Sylas sat awkwardly, keeping his eyes on his food.
"What is the meaning of this?" Lucian boomed, causing a few maids who were placing finishing touches on the table to scatter like rats. "Who said SHE could eat here? Heck, who said she could be anywhere in this palace?"
He pressed forward to Elowen who straightened her sitting posture.
"Lucian," she began. "A greeting for your mother before the interrogations would’ve been nice, no?"
Lucian growled when he got to her, aura threatening to explode. But then—he let out a shuddering breath, rubbing his forehead. "Mother, why? Why should I be coherent enough to greet when a snake is on our table?"
Elian focused his eyes on Estella.
She kept her head low but her face was riddled with guilt. And shame.
[Genuine responses if you ask me.]
’You can’t seriously be suggesting we keep this pest around us?’ Elian scoffed mentally. ’Yes, I feel... Pity for how Garrick deceived her while pretending to be her brother all those years. But... But she’s bad news.’
As all this went on, Kyren stood beside Elian, arms folded and an amused grin quivering on his mouth. "That’s why I love breakfast here. The Stormborn family and their drama."
"A family that you’re a part of." Elian whispered too hastily, bringing the Rogue king’s full attention to him.
The latter merely brought a hand to Elian’s waist, fingers dangerously close to his ass.
That was it. Yet Elian’s thighs were already squeezed with heat, embarrassment tightening his chest.
"It was the directive of the council of fangs," Elowen responded to Lucian after pausing for too long. "They believe Axel must have had a reason to leave Estella behind. Without getting rid of her."
Lucian’s anger burst through the mate bond in overwhelming waves. "I AM ALPHA KING!" He thundered, making Elowen sigh, Estella shrink and the room tremble. "I call the shots. And right now I don’t care what those two old coots said. Estella—"
He pointed a finger at her, seeming like he was about to rain hell.
"We advise you to keep her here, your majesty." A sharp, daring voice interrupted behind Elian and Kyren.
They both turned in time to witness Delta Reina and Gamma Drax striding into the dining room, the former’s expression decisive.
Suddenly, the tension in the room multiplied.
When they got close to Lucian, they stopped, bowing. "With you being the new Alpha King, we’ve had to handle old records before passing them to you. From your father’s rule." Reina continued. "Including from the times your father drew close to the Thorne family."
Everyone was silent, staring expectantly at them.
Elian especially.
He had a bad feeling about whatever this is.
Gamma Drax—always fiddling with his grey beard—took over after the dramatic pause. "It’s all been suspicious before now but we’ve found possible evidence that your father didn’t just know what Axel would end up becoming. But directly sponsored it. And the Dark Hand."
Elian’s eyes widened, his gaze wondering to Kyren and Lucian.
Shit.
[Looks like your father-in-law’s dirty secrets are about to be council business.]
