The members of the families were all Wizards with elderly holding official position, and the patriarch of the family was an occult master who had quite a few names and feats that made him a legend in the inner world.
As for the relationship between Bute and Salian was Bute was a of the branch of Salian family. But this wasn’t entirely the reason for Salian family to helping him, they do have the reason. In the eyes of public the Bute was a respectable gentleman as well as Councilor holding much authorities, as for Salian family although they were powerful they were unknown to public and apart from wizard title they didn’t have much authorities like Bute so likely Bute became an important pawn in their hands.
As for Bute he needed the Salian family help to establish his position and status in the world so it was a mutual benefit for both of them.
Mr. Ennius, whom Count Bute was going to ask to protect him, was also his blood relative.
