Chapter 447: Yuka Faction
Tatsugami Ruri possessed an ability that allowed her to freeze time, a power that sounded considerably more broken than it actually was whenever someone heard its name without knowing the details behind it.
The ability itself was actually quite simple, and unlike the absurdly powerful time manipulation abilities that existed in stories and legends, Ruri’s version came with a very specific limitation that kept it from becoming completely ridiculous.
She could only freeze the time of one person at a time, and the biggest drawback was that whenever she activated the ability, her own time would also become frozen along with the target’s.
Because of that restriction, Ruri could not simply freeze an enemy and then freely walk around them while they remained helpless, which was probably the first thing most people imagined when they heard that someone possessed the ability to freeze time.
Her power was not necessarily the strongest ability in existence, but it was extremely useful when used properly, especially when the right person was chosen as the target.
For Yuka, that particular ability was something she considered absolutely necessary.
Having someone capable of freezing another person’s time could make an enormous difference during a battle, particularly against opponents whose abilities were difficult to deal with through conventional means.
That was ultimately why Tatsugami Ruri had become part of the Yuka Faction, despite the fact that her ability came with a drawback that prevented her from casually abusing it whenever she felt like it.
"Do you think the Child of Anti-Prophecy is actually strong?" someone asked from beside Ruri.
The group was currently aboard a private plane, returning home after completing a mission that had required them to travel to France and several other countries before finally beginning their journey back.
The mission itself had not taken what most humans would consider an especially short amount of time, although describing it as a long mission would have been somewhat misleading when talking about demons like them.
Their understanding of time was simply different from that of ordinary humans.
They had lived for such incredibly long periods that spending ten years somewhere could easily feel like little more than a year had passed.
In fact, the members of the group had already spent six years away from their faction house.
For an ordinary human being, six years would have been a fairly significant portion of their life, but for demons with extraordinarily long lifespans, six years was hardly enough to make anyone panic about being away from home.
Ruri remained relatively quiet as she listened to the conversation, apparently giving the question some consideration before answering.
"Dunno."
The person who had originally spoken to her was none other than Watase Eriko, one of the more unusual members of the Yuka Faction.
Calling Eriko unusual was actually being rather generous.
Eriko was a werecat, and the basic nature of her powers was fairly self-explanatory once someone understood what she was.
Just as werewolves existed, werecats also existed, although Eriko happened to be one of the particularly powerful examples of that race.
She could transform herself into a human-like form while retaining various cat-like abilities, giving her incredible physical agility and reflexes that allowed her to move much faster than an ordinary person could ever hope to react.
Among the members of the Yuka Faction, Eriko was considered the strongest fighter for several very good reasons.
Her physical abilities were exceptional, but raw strength was not the only thing that made her dangerous.
Eriko also possessed an almost ridiculous enthusiasm for fighting, especially whenever she encountered someone who appeared to be strong.
She was the kind of person who could hear that someone was powerful and immediately start wondering whether she could punch them hard enough to find out for herself.
Calling her a bonehead would have been understandable, although meathead was probably a much more accurate description.
Eriko loved fighting that much.
There had already been numerous occasions when the Yuka Faction had gotten themselves into trouble because of her actions, particularly when she decided that whatever she wanted to do at the moment was more important than thinking about the consequences afterward.
Unfortunately for everyone else, Eriko was exactly the sort of person who could create an international incident and then look genuinely confused when people became upset about it.
The only person she was genuinely afraid of was Yuka.
That fact alone had saved the Yuka Faction from considerably more trouble than anyone would probably ever know.
Yuka had essentially placed Eriko on a leash, making it perfectly clear that if she caused serious trouble again, she would receive a punishment severe enough to make her regret whatever brilliant idea had entered her head.
That threat had actually worked surprisingly well.
Eriko had still caused trouble from time to time because expecting her to suddenly become completely responsible would have been wildly unrealistic, but she had at least stopped herself from crossing the line into actions that could drag the entire Yuka Faction into a faction war.
"I think so," another woman answered while casually looking down at her phone.
She barely seemed interested in the conversation at first, continuing to scroll through social media while chewing gum as though she were sitting somewhere completely unrelated to a discussion about one of the most important supernatural figures they had encountered recently.
She eventually blew a bubble with the gum, allowing it to grow larger and larger until it reached a rather impressive size.
The bubble suddenly popped against her face, but she did not seem particularly bothered by the minor failure.
She simply put the gum back into her mouth and continued chewing as though absolutely nothing had happened.
"I mean, he defeated that Souichiro during a faction war," she continued while scrolling through her phone. "I think there is definitely something worth paying attention to there."
Her name was Tsuruno Chiemi.
Unlike most members of the Yuka Faction, Chiemi’s ability was kept completely secret.
Her ability was known to be extremely powerful, but its actual nature remained hidden from almost everyone.
The only person who knew the full details of what Chiemi could do was Yuka herself.
Even the other members of the faction had never been told the truth about Chiemi’s ability, which naturally made them curious, although they had learned not to question Yuka too much about it.
All they really knew was that Yuka valued Chiemi enormously.
That alone was enough to tell them that Chiemi was far more important than she appeared.
"Well, it is good that he is strong!" Eriko exclaimed, immediately becoming more interested in the conversation. "That is the least he could be if he managed to catch Yuka’s attention in the first place."
Eriko’s grin widened as she leaned forward slightly, her excitement becoming increasingly obvious.
"And more importantly..." she continued before licking her lips with an eager expression. "I want to fight him myself and find out exactly what kind of power he has."
Eriko was more interested than anything else in discovering what this so-called Child of Anti-Prophecy was capable of.
She did not particularly care about the title itself, because names and grand descriptions were meaningless to someone like her if the person behind them could not actually fight.
What mattered to Eriko was strength.
If someone was strong, she wanted to fight them.
If someone was exceptionally strong, she wanted to fight them even more.
The fact that Kouhei had somehow managed to catch Yuka’s attention only made him more interesting in Eriko’s eyes.
Yuka was not someone who casually became interested in another person without a reason, and Eriko knew that very well.
If the Child of Anti-Prophecy had managed to attract her attention, then there had to be something unusual about him.
Eriko wanted to discover exactly what that something was.
While everyone continued relaxing during the remainder of the flight, a woman wearing a maid uniform eventually approached the group.
She maintained a calm and professional expression.
"We are going to land now," the maid informed them.
Eriko immediately looked toward her.
"Nah, I hate landing," she said, apparently having already made up her mind. "I would rather just jump out and get there myself, since I can probably reach the mansion just as quickly."
The maid stared at her for a moment.
The others also looked toward Eriko, although nobody seemed particularly surprised by what she had just suggested.
Eriko then stood up from her seat and walked toward the plane’s door.
Eriko opened the door anyway.
The sudden opening would normally have caused a serious disturbance while the plane was still airborne, with powerful winds rushing into the cabin and potentially throwing everything inside into chaos.
Fortunately, the people aboard the aircraft were demons.
They could handle the air pressure and the violent wind without much difficulty, so the situation was considerably less dangerous than it would have been for ordinary passengers.
Eriko looked down from the open doorway.
The altitude was extremely high.
She smiled.
Then she jumped.
She did not bother bringing a parachute because, from her perspective, carrying one would have been completely unnecessary.
Eriko was a werecat and a demon, which meant that the normal limitations of falling from a great height were not nearly as relevant to her as they would have been for an ordinary human.
Cats were famously associated with landing on their feet, although the idea that cats could survive any fall without injury was obviously nothing more than a myth.
Eriko, however, was not an ordinary cat.
She possessed supernatural abilities, enhanced physical strength, and the durability of a demon, so the consequences of jumping from an aircraft were considerably less frightening for her.
She eventually landed directly at the mansion belonging to the Yuka Faction.
The landing itself was treated with roughly the same importance as someone stepping off a bus, which was probably the most Eriko thing she could have possibly done after jumping out of a plane.
Once she had landed, Eriko immediately began sniffing the air.
Her expression changed slightly as she picked up a scent.
She knew exactly who she was looking for.
A grin appeared across her face.
Eriko licked her lips before suddenly dashing toward the source of the scent.
Her movement was incredibly fast, and within moments she had already covered a considerable distance.
"Here I come!" Eriko shouted enthusiastically as she charged forward.
Kouhei immediately felt something approaching him.
His instincts reacted before he could properly identify the source, warning him that a dangerous presence was rapidly closing in.
He turned toward the direction of the incoming presence and saw someone approaching at tremendous speed.
Kouhei’s expression immediately became serious.
There was no time to wonder why someone was attacking him or why Eriko had apparently decided that announcing her arrival was optional after jumping out of a plane.
He simply reacted.
Eriko coated her fist with mana, concentrating the energy around her hand until it reinforced her already formidable physical strength.
Her grin widened as she continued charging.
She clearly intended to strike Kouhei head-on and see how he would respond.
Kouhei recognized the incoming attack and immediately summoned his own weapon.
Mana gathered in his hand before rapidly taking shape, forming into a sword made entirely from his own energy.
The weapon appeared just as Eriko closed the remaining distance.
Kouhei tightened his grip around the mana sword and prepared himself for the collision.
