Chapter 443: It does not bother me
After Kouhei finished his conversation with Aria, he decided that it was probably time to head back to the training hall, where the members of both the Kouhei Faction and the Yuka Faction were currently training together. He had already been away from the group for a while, and although he was not particularly worried about them getting along, he figured it would be better for him to return before anyone started wondering where he had disappeared to.
He had only gotten partway there, however, when he unexpectedly ran into Asami.
The moment Asami noticed him, her cheeks immediately flushed red, and the redness spread all the way up to the tips of her ears. She looked as though she had just encountered something she desperately wished she had not seen, and unfortunately for her, that something happened to be Kouhei standing directly in front of her.
Kouhei stared at her for a moment, genuinely confused by the sudden reaction.
’D-Did I do something wrong, I wonder?’
That was the first thought that crossed his mind, mostly because he could not think of any other reasonable explanation for why Asami suddenly looked as though she wanted to disappear through the nearest wall. He briefly went over his recent actions in his head, trying to figure out whether he had said something offensive or accidentally done something that had rubbed her the wrong way.
Unfortunately, nothing immediately came to mind.
’Should I talk to her about it?’
It seemed like the most natural thing to consider. If something about Kouhei was bothering her, then ignoring the problem would probably only make things more awkward between them later. Besides, he was already standing right in front of her, so walking away without saying anything would have felt rather strange.
"Inogashira-san?" Kouhei called out, turning toward her.
Asami, who had been hoping to have absolutely nothing to do with Kouhei at that moment and had been mentally preparing herself to get as far away from him as possible, immediately stopped when she heard him call her name.
Her heart began beating rapidly.
She had seen him.
She had seen far more than she ever wanted to see.
The memory of the previous night still lingered inside her mind, and unfortunately, her Clairvoyance had given her a front-row seat to something she would have much preferred to forget. Because of her loyalty to Yuka, Asami had been keeping an eye on Kouhei, intending to learn more about him and figure out what kind of person he really was.
She had certainly learned something.
Perhaps a little too much.
Asami had watched Kouhei and Hina having sex for almost the entire night through her Clairvoyance, and the experience had left her in such a strange state that she had barely managed to sleep afterward. She had initially thought that she could simply observe him and gather useful information, but things had gone in a direction she had absolutely not anticipated.
The situation became even more complicated when she discovered that Hina was apparently not the only woman involved with Kouhei.
Asami eventually realized that many of the women in the Kouhei Faction were also his women, and that discovery had completely changed the way she looked at him. Until then, she had thought Kouhei was simply an unusual candidate for the position of demon lord, but now she was beginning to wonder whether there was something much more deliberate behind his actions.
Of course, Asami understood that having multiple partners was not particularly strange among demons.
Demons, especially powerful ones, generally did not have the same expectations regarding relationships that humans did. Someone with enough power, wealth, status, or influence could have multiple wives, husbands, lovers, or other partners without it being considered particularly unusual. There were still demons who preferred having only one partner, of course, but they represented a relatively small minority.
From that perspective, Kouhei’s situation should not have been especially surprising.
Yet Asami could not shake the feeling that there was something else going on.
After everything she had seen, she had begun wondering whether Kouhei’s decision to become a candidate for demon lord was partly motivated by his desire to increase the number of women surrounding him. He certainly seemed like a womanizer from what she had witnessed, although his appearance made the whole thing somewhat difficult to believe at first.
Kouhei did not exactly have the appearance of some arrogant playboy.
If anything, his attitude often came across as relatively harmless.
That was almost what made it worse.
His seemingly mild personality could easily make people underestimate him, while his actual behavior suggested that he was far more complicated than he initially appeared. Asami could not help thinking that someone like that could potentially manipulate people without them realizing what he was doing until it was already too late.
Then there was Yuka.
Asami believed that Kouhei’s interest in Yuka was probably connected to his larger ambitions. If he could enter into a relationship with Yuka, he could potentially strengthen his own position while also gaining access to her influence. More importantly, Asami suspected that he might eventually try to convince Yuka to abandon her candidacy for the position of demon lord altogether.
The idea sounded incredibly sly.
At the same time, Asami had to admit that it was not impossible.
In fact, from her perspective, the plan seemed disturbingly plausible.
That was precisely why she had become so suspicious of Kouhei.
"Am I bothering you, perhaps?" Kouhei asked after noticing that Asami still seemed unusually uncomfortable around him.
"What? Of course not, Kouhei-sama," Asami quickly replied, although her voice was noticeably more nervous than usual. "I do not think that you are bothering me at all."
Despite everything she had been thinking about, Asami still chose to answer him properly. Part of her reasoning came from her loyalty to Yuka, but another part came from simple curiosity. If Kouhei really did have some kind of hidden plan, then getting him to talk about himself might give her more information.
She just had to be careful.
Unfortunately, the problem was that Kouhei was standing right in front of her, which made maintaining a completely calm expression significantly harder than it should have been.
"I see..." Kouhei replied, staring at her for a moment before tilting his head slightly. "Then why are you facing away from me while you’re talking?"
Asami’s body stiffened slightly.
She had already turned away from him, but apparently, Kouhei had noticed the obvious fact that she was deliberately refusing to look at his face.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Asami answered, trying to sound as composed as possible. "I simply prefer not to look at your face right now. Is that something that bothers you, Kouhei-sama?"
"Not really, but..." Kouhei paused, clearly trying to figure out how to phrase his thoughts without making the situation even stranger. "I feel like I’m really bothering you if you’re doing something like that."
"No, it does not bother me at all," Asami insisted. "I promise you that much."
Kouhei continued staring at her.
The answer had technically been clear, but her behavior was telling him something completely different.
He could not figure out what it was, though.
From Kouhei’s perspective, Asami had suddenly become incredibly awkward around him for seemingly no reason. He had no idea about her Clairvoyance, and he certainly had no idea that she had used it to observe him and Hina the previous night. As far as he knew, Asami had simply developed some strange dislike toward him overnight.
The situation made considerably more sense from Asami’s perspective.
While she had been using her Clairvoyance to watch Kouhei and Hina having sex, she had unexpectedly found herself reacting to what she was seeing. At first, she had tried to dismiss the strange sensation as simple embarrassment, but it had quickly become much harder to ignore. She had felt unusually hot, and her body had reacted in ways that she had found deeply embarrassing.
She had even found herself pressing her legs together while watching.
The realization alone had been enough to make her want to bury her face somewhere and forget the entire experience.
She had needed a tremendous amount of self-control to keep herself from letting her hand wander lower, and even remembering that fact while standing in front of Kouhei was making her cheeks burn all over again.
Kouhei, meanwhile, remained completely oblivious.
"I-Is that so?" he asked, still sounding uncertain.
Asami gave a small nod, although she continued facing away from him because looking directly into his eyes.
Kouhei felt as though she was deliberately avoiding him, and she was doing it so openly that he almost wanted to ask her about it again. Still, he could not exactly force her to explain herself when she was repeatedly insisting that nothing was wrong.
Pushing her further would probably make the situation worse.
Besides, there was always the possibility that she simply disliked him.
That explanation was not exactly unreasonable.
Kouhei was directly competing against Yuka, after all, and Asami’s loyalty to her master was something he already understood. If Asami viewed Kouhei as an enemy because of the upcoming struggle for the position of demon lord, then her discomfort around him was perfectly understandable.
"Well then, take care," Kouhei finally said, deciding that it would probably be better to leave her alone for now.
"Y-You too, Kouhei-sama," Asami replied.
Kouhei took a few steps away before briefly glancing back.
Something still felt strange.
He could not quite put his finger on it, but Asami’s reaction had definitely been unusual. She had insisted that he was not bothering her, yet practically everything about her body language suggested otherwise.
Still, there was not much he could do about it.
If she genuinely had a problem with him, then she would probably tell him eventually.
At least, that was what Kouhei hoped.
He sighed quietly before continuing toward the training hall, deciding that there was little point in overthinking the encounter.
