Chapter 124 - 104: Dividing the Base
Lin Wu and his group of three had an awkward combination in battle, especially since Maya became addicted to the repeating crossbow. In close combat, she would always snatch the kills. Fortunately, Maya still had to pick up her arrows, which gave Lin Wu and Little Knife some space to level up.
The leveling between Lin Wu and Little Knife was also not cooperative. Little Knife could confront the zombies head-on. If there were a few zombies, she would just trample them to death. If there were many, she would grab one and throw it. When facing a Frenzy, she didn’t give Lin Wu a chance, knocking it out with a punch before stomping it to death.
Lin Wu was the only one who couldn’t face a large number of regular zombies head-on. Throughout the leveling journey, he was essentially slacking off. Maya progressed quickly and, after getting proficient with the repeating crossbow, started to challenge the Frenzies. Since Frenzies charge in a straight line, her first shot usually hit its mark. After a Frenzy’s head exploded, it would fall to the side, close to Maya, who had no choice but to run away, using stamina to create some distance before turning back to shoot another arrow.
This shot was very risky because Maya did not know the distance to the Frenzy. She had to shoot the crossbow arrow while stopping and turning at the same time, and the shot had to be a headshot, or she’d get injured and infected. She had to face the same danger again, all because of another weakness of the repeating crossbow.
With ten zombies standing, Maya would estimate the distance to the second zombie as she shot the first, allowing her to continue shooting and exploding the zombies’ heads. A headshot would knock the Frenzy to one side, causing a significant shift in the position of the head and body. A pistol could continue firing at a moving target, but this was unfriendly for a light crossbow, as arrows fly slower than bullets.
Maya tried twice. Although she killed the Frenzy on both occasions, she got seriously injured each time, having to bandage her wounds and take painkillers after killing each Frenzy. Even with an abundance of medical supplies at the base, it was too costly to sustain, so Maya gave up on the idea of fighting Frenzies alone.
Little Knife couldn’t stand to see others upset and comforted Maya, "Next time you have to face a Frenzy, you will definitely be the last one standing." After all, no one else had the ability to kill a Frenzy alone.
Since the two women had things under control, Lin Wu started practicing the Quick Gunner skill. He would rest when out of stamina and use it up whenever he had some. Perhaps it was due to handling guns every day, Lin Wu’s Quick Gunner skill level had increased to the second level before he even realized it.
The second-level Quick Gunner increased the headshot chance from 15 meters, 15%, to 20 meters, 20%. If it was just that, Quick Gunner would still be a useless skill, only cool to show off when Dawn was acting up. The second level came with an independent skill, consuming double, or 30%, stamina to ensure a headshot within 3 meters. Using the Quick Gunner skill on a player or zombie within 3 meters assured a headshot.
This...
As Lin Wu watched the two sisters effortlessly slaughter zombies on either side, he sat down to study the Quick Gunner skill silently. After a while, Lin Wu felt that what he needed was a Barrett Anti-material Sniper Rifle, given that a full charge of stamina allowed for only three uses of Quick Gunner. It just didn’t seem right to run within 3 meters of zombies and fire a Barrett.
