Chapter 479: Magical Warfare Unit, Erza Nightwalker
Carla’s face darkened with guilt. "Because... we were originally born in this world. When we were still just eggs, knowledge about Edolas and a specific mission was embedded into us. It’s our fault that Magnolia disappeared."
Wendy quickly stepped forward, trying to comfort her. "Carla, we’ve already talked about this! You and Happy didn’t do anything wrong!"
"But I still believe... since we came from Edolas, then we were at least indirectly responsible."
"Programming knowledge and missions into eggs..." Rhodes murmured, his tone thoughtful. As someone who had inherited knowledge through magical means himself, he could accept the explanation without much resistance.
Even though the idea of imprinting missions into unborn creatures sounded a bit far-fetched, in a world where magic could rewrite memories and alter fate, it wasn’t impossible.
"No, that doesn’t add up," Rhodes reasoned aloud. "Happy’s lived in the guild since the day he hatched. It’s been six years now. If he really had a secret mission, someone would’ve noticed. Not to mention, just look at him..."
It wasn’t that Rhodes was underestimating Happy’s intelligence, but the blue cat had never exactly been subtle. If he’d been hiding some grand mission all this time, it would’ve been the best-kept secret in all of Fairy Tail.
"Exactly!" Carla said, clearly frustrated. "Whatever that mission was, we were supposed to know it from the moment we were born! But that tomcat doesn’t remember anything!"
Her ears twitched in irritation. Though she’d long since decided to protect Wendy with all her heart, she couldn’t help but feel resentful. Why was she burdened with hidden truths and heavy responsibilities... while Happy got to laugh and play like any carefree child?
So was she the only one given this ’mission’? Was the spell only cast on her? Or had something gone wrong with Happy’s memory?
One thing was clear: Carla had no intention of fulfilling any shady directive. Her heart was aligned with protecting people, not betraying them. Which meant it likely wasn’t a spell that influenced the mind, but something else entirely.
