The fireworks had long since faded, leaving only the faint scent of smoke lingering in the air.
Above them, a slim crescent moon hung quietly in the sky. Distant lanterns from scattered houses barely reached this quiet corner of the city.
Rhodes and Mira stayed close, neither of them speaking. Time passed in a gentle silence, the moment suspended like a held breath.
Then, without warning, Rhodes let out a long sigh.
Mira froze, cheeks flushed red-hot, and tucked herself deeper into his embrace to hide her face.
Her thoughts were a chaotic mess, and her heart was racing uncontrollably.
Rhodes buried his face in her soft silver hair. He held her close for a few more seconds, then finally loosened his arms.
"I—"
He was about to say, "I'm going to go take a shower," but before he could finish, Mira sprang up like a startled kitten.
"Don't follow me!" she yelped, tugging at her vest as she leapt nimbly from the rooftop and dashed off into the night in a flustered panic.
Of course Rhodes had to follow her. But not like this.
