Chapter 559 - Chapter 559 Chapter 559 Borrowing a Few Eggs to Bring Back
Chapter 559: Chapter 559 Borrowing a Few Eggs to Bring Back Chapter 559: Chapter 559 Borrowing a Few Eggs to Bring Back That night at the Xie Residence’s dinner table, there was, unprecedentedly, only a plate of wild vegetables.
Madam Xie and her two daughters had weathered far tougher times before and didn’t mind at all; they still ate with apparent relish.
On the contrary, it was Old Master Mo who found he couldn’t swallow a bite.
Having grown accustomed over the past few days to having meat at every meal, suddenly being confronted with these bitter and astringent wild vegetables was something Old Master Mo couldn’t adapt to. Although Madam Xie had deliberately used a lot of oil when frying them, they were after all wild vegetables, and still quite bitter.
“Eunuch, what’s the matter? Don’t you like the meal?” Madam Xie saw Old Master Mo had hardly touched his chopsticks and was staring blankly like a wooden statue seated on a stool.
“No,” Old Master Mo’s voice was muffled as he poked around in his rice with his chopsticks, unable to bring himself to eat.
Xuexue chuckled to herself, thinking how this old man had grown so picky after coming to their home. She wondered how he would manage to live once he returned to the Mo family.
Madam Xie’s face was filled with apology: “We really don’t have any other vegetables at home. If we did, I would definitely cook some for you. Eunuch, please bear with it for now. Tomorrow Xuexue will go to town and she’ll buy you something delicious.”
Xuexue grabbed a chopstick full of wild vegetables and stuffed them into her mouth. After a few chews, she swallowed the bitter concoction without even blinking, and taking the opportunity, she stole a glance at Old Master Mo and deliberately said, “I’m not going to town tomorrow. Tomorrow, our family will eat wild vegetables again.”
Old Master Mo slammed his chopsticks down on the table with a smack, clearly angry, but he refrained from throwing a fit.
“Xuexue,” Madam Xie looked at Xuexue and shook her head, signaling her not to provoke Old Master Mo.
With utmost seriousness, Xuexue said, “Mother, I’m not joking. I really am not going to town tomorrow.”
“If we have no vegetables at home tomorrow, you won’t go to town to buy some?” Madam Xie was used to Xuexue going to town every other day or so to gather things.
Xuexue shook her head: “I won’t go these next few days.”
She wanted to take advantage of the free time to head into the mountains.
Madam Xie: “If we run out of vegetables at home, what will we do?”
“We used to eat wild vegetables every day, and we got by just fine. We can do it again now.” After saying this, Xuexue turned to Chuner and asked, “Chuner, don’t you agree?”
Chuner glanced warily at Old Master Mo: “If sister can eat it, so can I.”
“Our Chuner is so amazing,” Xuexue couldn’t help but praise her.
Old Master Mo’s face grew even darker, but he was at a loss for words. After all, who could he blame? Today, he had been at home when Madam Ruan had stolen the pork. In the end, he could only blame his lack of vigilance.
“I’m not eating anymore.” Old Master Mo stood up, his face a mask of displeasure, and walked outside.
It seemed he was heading to his room to sulk.
Madam Xie felt a bit of a headache coming on and said, “Oh goodness! If your grandfather doesn’t eat and ruins his health, what are we to do?”
