The Paladin in the Abyss

Chapter 861 - 838: Activating Objects

Chapter 861 -838: Activating Objects

“What a great display of teamwork.” Bruto clutched his waist, looking up at Lancelot. “I should get half the credit for this, right?”

“A third, no more.” Lancelot shook his head. “Take care of the one behind me, and I’ll give you two-thirds.”

The skeleton knight, who had just taken a kick to the face, propped himself up on his longsword, half-kneeling on the ground, clearly recovering from the dizziness. On the other side, Tanya was in a very dangerous situation, surrounded by two enemies. She had just been struck on the thigh, and the pain was distorting her combat movements, making her look incredibly distressed.

Although Lancelot hadn’t yet made his move, one of the two skeleton knights was forced to withdraw from the battle to avoid being ambushed by him, which significantly eased the pressure on the half-elf.

Not far away, Kalalin, Alamir, little Isha, and Barrend joined the other ambushers, together attacking the corpse demons. The old dwarf Barrend was less impulsive than the younger ones. He carried a heavy and solid tower shield, standing beside Kalalin, as defense was what the old dwarf did best, ensuring his companions could cast spells without interruption.

Though the enemy numbers were many, Kalalin regretted that, as allies were already engaged in close combat with the enemy, he couldn’t use his favorite Fireball Technique. Watching the reliable silhouette of the dwarf shield guard in front of him, Kalalin decided to try something more daring, like casting a complex spell he had never used before.

He reached into his magical backpack and took out a bundle of scrolls and a small pouch. The pouch was an ammo bag for a scholar’s sling, containing small, egg-sized iron balls with irregular edges. These iron balls were crafted by Bruto using some scrap material, with the jagged edges intentionally made to cause extra cutting damage. Kalalin’s next spell would involve these iron balls.

He took ten iron balls from the ammo bag, piling them carelessly in front of him. Then, he untied the strap binding the scrolls and unfurled the arm-thick bundle. Even without understanding the complex and elegant magical symbols, an outsider could tell its extraordinary quality from the scroll’s material. The scroll was much whiter and smoother than common parchment, the ink showing no signs of smudging. It was made from vellum, crafted from the hide of young beasts, prized for its excellent writing surface, essential for mid-to-high-level spell scrolls and costing ten times more than ordinary parchment.

Fortunately, mercenary work in the Abyss was highly lucrative, and their absurdly high survival rate meant Kalalin never had to consider cost when researching magic.
