Heart Over Sword

Chapter 258: Lyvarian Court (2)

Evanna held the queen’s stare, ignoring the threat in her gaze. She knew now her mother was never welcome in the court. She couldn’t have been. Or was this judgemental look because she was illegitimate and her mother nothing more than the king’s mistress?

Queen Iolena acted like Evanna was distasteful, but to the princess, the roles were reversed. She put her thoughts aside. This was not the place, and the gem was more important than some fight of wills and mental strategy in a court Evanna did not know the rules of. If there were any rules at all. She sensed there were none.

"Your majesties," Evanna began, but the Queen held her hand up, glancing at the guards of the walls.

"We are normally aware of a visit from other kingdoms. Yet before me is Arawn, son of.." Queen Iolena gritted her teeth together. "King Thalinal, and Evanna, daughter of Selvin and Loraven, breech my borders without an invite. Normally you are shot on site-"

"Instead, we fought a dragon. I’m sure we are even," Evanna snapped, glaring at the Queen, not bothering to correct the Queen’s slip. She was much older than her appearance; it was possible the old bag couldn’t remember who the king was; she could have been lost in the past or was not updated on the human kingdoms.

The latter could not be possible. Evanna glanced in Fiza’s direction, and as she suspected, the night fae was moving away from the group, and the guards allowed it. Fiza’s destination had been the Lyvarian palace; she must have information for the king and queen. The queen was old and losing her memory, it seemed.

"Oh?" The king ambled over to stand just in front of the queen. They stood in front of the dais and thrones. The king’s wings fluttered slightly as though revealing his excitement from hearing about a dragon. "And you are here alive? That does cause for celebration. Our granddaughter is indeed skilful. I wonder.."

He took another step forwards, his barefoot smooth and pretty. That’s right, even his feet were pretty; it made her eyes narrow in annoyance. Not just because of her grandfather’s obvious looks but because they were unaware of the loss the group was facing.

"Just how powerful you are.. what blood runs thick inside of you.." King Nuvian tilted his head, and a glimmer sparkled in his eyes, making her shiver.
