Ch. 57 - Blasted to Bits
“Mountain Splitter!” Chen Liu roared, felling the third nine-star zombie. The Brothers Squad, at half strength, was barely stabilised after killing their nine-star. The cost of their miscalculation was brutal. The Groundhog Squad, shielded by Fu Guo’an’s earth spikes, lost only one, even collecting crystals mid-fight. “Clean up the horde!” Chen Liu ordered. His authority was growing among the troops. Soldiers and squads rallied, counterattacking as Zhao Tinglong faltered against the Berserker. His suit was shredded, and his strikes were weaker. The Berserker cackled, enraged as its nine-star guards fell.
“Can you lock onto it?” Chen Liu asked Gao Xiaomei. She shook her head bitterly. “Too fast—no chance.” We’re running out of time, Chen Liu thought. Zhao’s collapse would be a great blow to the chances of their survival. “Plan?” Gao asked. “Ability users need to sync up,” Chen Liu said, turning to Zhang Chong. “Hold here. You good?” “Go back him up, Captain,” Zhang Chong replied, confident against the remaining eight-stars. The Zhong brothers rebuffed Chen Liu’s plea. “We’re not dying for that freak,” they snapped. Cowards, Gao sneered. Fu Guo’an, more cooperative, agreed to Chen Liu’s plan. “Let’s move!” they said, advancing.
Disaster struck. GUOOAAAH! The Berserker’s punch sent Zhao Tinglong flying. He was unconscious before hitting the ground. He can’t die! Chen Liu panicked, charging to taunt the Berserker. GUOOAAAH~~ It sneered, sidestepping Chen Liu’s hurled steel bar but lunging at him. Chen Liu’s battle instincts were straining to track it. His axe swung, hitting a shadow. BANG! A fist smashed his back. He spun his axe defensively, but the Berserker circled, toying with him. BANG! Another punch crushed his face, sending teeth flying. “Captain!” Zhang Chong and Yu Na cried helplessly. Gao moved, but Fu stopped her. “One shot, don’t ruin it.” Chen Liu, bloodied and furious, swung wildly. Silently, his instincts were peaking.
BANG! A gut punch ruptured organs; only regeneration kept him alive. “Got you!” he snarled, catching the Berserker’s real body. His fastest swing cleaved its leg off. GUOOAAAH~~~! It roared. “Now!” Gao’s gravity field pinned it as it staggered. The monstrous enemy fell. “Earth Spikes!” Fu sealed it in layered spikes. Chen Liu sprinted clear. “Fire!” Three rockets slammed in. The Berserker was blasted to bits by the, its final howl drowned in the furious explosion.
