Ch. 54 - Each Shows Their Skill
“We’re going up,” Chen Liu declared, charging with Zhang Chong into the zombie horde at Meishan Town’s middle school. Yu Na stayed back, firing her crossbow from behind a vehicle alongside soldiers with semi-automatic rifles. She conserved ammo unlike the soldiers’ indiscriminate sprays. The Zhong brothers of the Brothers Squad dove in, their physical abilities shining in close combat. Chen Liu’s trio led as a spearhead, with the other squads mopping up stragglers and soldiers covering the flanks. Their formation seemed seamless. His axe danced—slashing, hooking, blocking—dispatching sub-seven-star zombies effortlessly. Months of training paid off, he thought, his technique now a martial art. Zhang Chong’s machete guarded his flank. Together, they were lethal, outkilling even the soldiers. “So strong!” a soldier gasped, awed. Zhao Tinglong, commanding from the rear, noted Chen Liu’s precision. No prodigy, but lucky—maybe a bloodline inheritance, he thought, staying back as the mission’s Evolver anchor.
The squads unleashed their strengths. Fu Guo’an’s Groundhog Squad fought within an earthen spike cage, leaving narrow gaps for zombies to be cut down by his welders. Smart, safe tactics, Chen Liu thought, though the temporary spikes crumbled fast. Gao Xiaomei’s Nightingale Squad wielded her gravity field, slowing zombies for easy kills. Top-tier support, Zhao thought, envying their abilities but noting their resistance to military control. The Brothers Squad, with Zhong Shan attacking and Zhong Yong defending, led in kills. Numbers matter, Chen Liu thought, feeling the horde’s endless pressure. The whole town’s here, he feared, as six-star zombies vanished, replaced by seven-stars, then eight- and nine-stars. Fu Guo’an’s energy drained maintaining his cage; Gao Xiaomei sweated under her field’s strain. “How many are there?!” Fu cursed.
A scream pierced the air—a Brothers Squad member fell to an eight-star. “Why’s the army hiding?!” Zhong Shan roared, furious at the loss. Zhao’s eyes flashed coldly. “Rocket launcher,” he ordered, firing a warhead into the horde. Boom! Gore flew leaving a crater in the ground. Chen Liu shivered. That’d end us, he thought. Zhong Shan paled, silenced. Two more rockets blasted gaps, but ammo limits and point-target damage curbed their impact, though the shock paused the horde. Perfect deterrent, Chen Liu thought. But almost immediately, a howl from the school reignited the horde’s frenzy, signaling a greater threat.
