Lu Wanwan glanced at the time, realized it was late, and hurriedly got them into the car.
Having been out for the day, both of their faces showed signs of fatigue.
Fortunately, the back seat was spacious enough; Little Youyou climbed in and unceremoniously began to snore away in no time, while Little Momo sat by the window, resting his head on his hand as he looked out, seemingly also on the verge of sleep.
Little Youyou’s head rested on Lu Wanwan’s lap. She reached out to gently stroke it and suddenly looked up, "Zhao Chen, is he in some sort of emergency?"
"Miss Lu, are you worrying about President Gu?" Zhao Chen, unsure of what to say, resorted to beating around the bush, smilingly said, "Or perhaps you fear there’s something President Gu can’t handle?"
"I just noticed that he didn’t look too well when he left." She looked down, pondering.
While driving, Zhao Chen reassured her, "Miss Lu, it’s not surprising that President Gu looks unwell. Since you don’t work at the Gu Corporation, you might not be aware. President Gu often looks that way; we’ve all gotten used to it by now."
"It’s only you, Miss Lu, who gets the privilege to see President Gu in good spirits. Most people aren’t that lucky. We’re grateful enough not to be scolded." Zhao Chen shook his head. "It’s not me being critical, but in our company, especially those working on the same floor as President Gu, those who have stayed so far are the ones with strong mental resilience; those with a fragile heart have long since left."
Lu Wanwan paused, then pursed her lips and smiled faintly.
She wasn’t new to Gu Annan, knowing well that he was the sort who felt distant to others.
The strictness in his work did not surprise her at all.
Even she didn’t know how many times she had endured his cold demeanor and pressure.
"Miss Lu, you don’t even need to worry about any female colleagues getting too close to President Gu, as that’s improbable. I think everyone on this floor hopes you and President Gu can reconcile, as that would lessen our pressure considerably. You might not realize, but recently our company has enjoyed a rare, spring-like warmth," he said.
Lu Wanwan’s mouth twitched, "Zhao Chen, you’re overselling it a bit. If it were as you say, how could your company manage to retain anyone?"
Zhao Chen stated matter-of-factly, "Though we have a devil for a boss and the work is extremely demanding, it really does toughen us up. Most importantly, the salary is high. If Miss Lu wishes to experience and possibly enjoy it, you could also try working at our company."
Lu Wanwan looked at the mirror inside the car, where Zhao Chen was speaking and smiling during the conversation.
Suddenly, she said, "Zhao Chen, you’ve been beating around the bush for a while, is it because you don’t want to answer my question?"
Zhao Chen: "..." She had caught on so quickly.
Having no choice, he sighed and said, "It’s really not a big deal, just that President Gu has a relative who was hospitalized."
He feared that by saying nothing, Lu Wanwan would become even more curious.
"He just went to visit the hospital and will be back soon. Since your relationship with President Gu isn’t completely mended, it wasn’t convenient for him to bring you along, and he also knew you would worry about the kids."
Only then did Lu Wanwan refrain from commenting further as their current relationship indeed was not suitable for meeting his family members; it was better to take it slow.
After returning home, she seriously relayed the situation briefly to the two little ones, particularly to her daughter.
"So, Uncle Gu is Daddy?" Little Youyou’s eyes widened, "Is he really Daddy?"
"That’s right. Would you blame Mommy for not telling you earlier?"
After a moment of surprise, Little Youyou cheered, "That’s great, from now on I can directly call him Daddy without worrying Mommy won’t allow it!"
