With food in his pocket, his heart wasn’t panicked. He spent another two days increasing his stock of dried fish from around fifty to a hundred.
As the old saying goes, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. To prevent theft of food from the cellar when he left his camp, Lin Yang adopted the same strategy.
He stored half of the dried fish in a cellar sealed with a large rock, and the remaining half near the lake area. He cut down three pine trees from a few meters off the ground, creating an open triangular platform.
The chopped-off treetops were then crafted into a simple ladder.
After laying pine branches on the platform for storing the smoked fish, he covered them with more pine branches to block out sunlight, ensuring they wouldn’t spoil from high temperatures and also protecting them from most ground-dwelling animals.
Every day, when he went to the lake to fetch water for cooking, Lin Yang would carry his fishing gear. If he caught fresh fish, he wouldn’t touch the reserves. If the catch was poor, he’d just use some of the dried fish for cooking. This went on for a few days without incident.
