Chapter 58: We’ll leave later
Zhao Yan smirked but said nothing, his expression one of quiet amusement. Hua Jing was grateful he didn’t retort. If he did, she might stumble over her words and make a fool of herself. She wasn’t ready to confront the turmoil in her chest—the way her heart was racing for reasons she couldn’t understand.
Her emotions felt alien. Never before had she experienced this kind of reaction, not even during her relationship with Xu Ming in her original world. Xu Ming, she thought bitterly. That idiot.
The thought of him was enough to pull her out of her daze. That bastard Xu Ming, who had left her for another woman—a woman who, of all people, turned out to be Hua Ling in her original world! The memory made Hua Jing clench her fists.
She hadn’t seen any signs of Xu Ming in this world so far. Plenty of names had come up since her transmigration, but none that pointed to him. Still, the possibility lingered, gnawing at her. Could he exist in this world? Would Hua Ling find her way to him again, just as she had before?
Hua Jing’s mind swirled with the thought. That pair of scoundrels. Her lips pressed into a thin line, and she stole a glance at Zhao Yan, wondering if he might know of Xu Ming. But one look at him, standing there calm and composed as always, made her second-guess herself. Zhao Yan seemed like someone who had lived his entire life inside the palace, shielded from ordinary matters. How could he know someone like Xu Ming?
Still, she made a mental note to ask Xia Lin later. If anyone might have heard of Xu Ming—or a person resembling him in this world—it would be her.
Zhao Yan, meanwhile, had been quietly observing her changing expressions. His smirk deepened for a brief moment before he shook his head in resignation. Trying to understand Hua Jing would likely take a lifetime, and even then, he wasn’t sure he’d succeed.
"You should get ready," he said, his tone casual but firm. "We’ll leave later."
Hua Jing blinked, his words snapping her out of her spiraling thoughts. She nodded absently as he turned to leave. Her gaze followed him as he exited the room, his figure disappearing through the doorway.
The silence that followed was strangely comforting, allowing her to breathe deeply and sort through her emotions.
Zhao Yan wa doing things to her. Before, she hated the mere presence of him yet now, she did not mind it at all.
