Chapter 101: Delusional
"So, let me get this right, you two lived off the grid and have never entered a dungeon city? And you wish to work here as Breakers?"
The border officer raised his eyebrow as he checked the papers in front of him. He had a nametag that said "Archie." It showed the picture of a couple, a couple of photographs, written testimonies, and the names: Lucian and Chiara Alvestra.
The cold air from the air-conditioning was a great comfort from the hot sun outside. Inside a small, enclosed room, the couple was being investigated.
They were wearing clothes that looked tattered. They were dirty, greasy, and had even parts of their faces caked with dirt.
"Yes, officer. Monsters attacked our village. We fought some, but there were just too many. We couldn’t even take anything with us but the clothes on our backs," the woman sobbed.
The man beside her rubbed her back. "Look, officer, I know you’re just doing your job. But we are just common folk who want to live our lives in peace. As you can see, my wife is still emotional. The attack was—horrific, to say the least."
Unable to remain stoic, the officer fiddled with his hat as he sighed, "Look, I really am sorry, but the dungeon cities are in lockdown because of the announcement a few days ago. Letting you inside is not possible..."
"No... darling... I can’t go back there. I just can’t... I would rather die!"
Desperate, the woman abruptly stood up; tears fell from her eyes as she tried to kneel. Her husband quickly tried to stop her from prostrating herself.
"Chiara, you have to be careful; the baby!"
"Baby?" the officer gasped, "She’s pregnant?"
