Talent Awakening: Draconic Overlord Of The Apocalypse

Chapter 548: Overlord vs. Abyss

Alister slowly stepped forward, each movement making the earth groan beneath his massive weight. The rain hissed against his golden-scaled hide, steam rising in thin coils where droplets met the heat radiating from him.

Eli’Erel’s gaze remained fixed on him, unflinching. Her wings shifted once, obsidian feathers catching the stormlight as she lifted herself higher in the air.

"No matter what you think will happen here today," she said, her voice sharp enough to cut through the thunder, "in the end, it will not turn out as you hope."

A low growl rolled from Alister’s chest, not of anger, but of something heavier—certainty. His golden eyes glimmered like twin suns through the storm, unblinking, unyielding.

"We will see."

Spears of pure light materialized around him, each edge flickering like molten glass.

He hurled them with such force that the air warped around them. Eli’Erel countered in an instant—a great scythe of abyssal shadow erupted in her grip, cleaving multiple spears in two as they passed. The halves exploded into streams of gold that curved back toward her like hunting birds, only to be swallowed by the writhing darkness coiling around her form.

She struck first this time, hurling herself into a spin that birthed a thousand knives of shadow. They spiraled outward, weaving into a web that collapsed around him. The strands hissed where they touched his scales, trying to eat through his armor.

Alister’s maw opened. Golden fire roared forth. Burning through the web, devouring it in a blinding flash.

Eli’Erel darted in, shadows rippling off her like a storm surge. Her scythe whipped forward in a blur, aimed for the join between Alister’s shoulder plates.

He didn’t step back. He didn’t block.

Instead, his right claw traced a single, languid arc in the air. Golden sigils blossomed in its wake, and suddenly, her swing slowed — not in her perception, but in reality itself. The scythe passed inches short, the delay stretching just long enough for her to realize it before the rhythm snapped back to normal.

"You telegraph too much," Alister said, his voice calm, almost instructional. "A killing stroke should not announce itself."

Before she could recover, three spears of light formed above her and fell like divine verdicts. She dissolved into mist, slipping between them — only for the spears to halt midair, pivot, and chase her retreat.

She landed on a crumbling rooftop, spinning to slash them down — but he was already moving. Alister’s wings opened wide, lightning leaping from tip to tip in jagged arcs that grounded themselves into the buildings around her, blowing stone to molten slag.

The lightning strikes converged, corralling Eli’Erel into a narrowing cage of destruction. Each blast melted the rain into steam before it even touched the ground, cloaking the battlefield in a swirling haze of gold and white.

From somewhere within that storm, her laughter rang out — low, mocking, unfazed.

"You think you can pen me in, Overlord?" she called, her voice carrying through the chaos like a blade across glass.

The steam split. From its depths, she emerged — wings flared, every feather glistening with liquid shadow that dripped away into the air like oil. The scythe in her grip burned with a darkness so dense it seemed to absorb the light around it.

Alister’s eyes narrowed.

She vanished.

No sound, no rush of wind, just absence.

The instant her shadow flickered at his flank, he was already in motion. One wing swept forward like a shield, shimmering with a lattice of golden light that caught her strike mid-swing. The impact rang out like a cathedral bell, sending ripples through the ground.

Eli’Erel didn’t disengage — she pushed, the abyssal energy from her weapon gnawing at the light construct. Cracks spiderwebbed across it, thin streams of black leaking through.

Alister responded by stepping into her, his claw snapping out like a striking serpent. It didn’t touch her — it didn’t need to. The air before him bent inward, compressed into a point, before erupting outward in a golden shockwave.

She was hurled back, slamming into the side of a rain-slick tower that cracked from the impact. But she was already spinning upright before the stones could fall, kicking off the wall to launch herself back toward him.

This time, Alister didn’t wait.

Dozens of radiant glyphs ignited around him in a spiraling pattern, each one feeding power into the next until they flared as one. The ground beneath his feet liquefied into molten gold, and from it, spears, blades, and shields of light rose like an army answering his call.

They moved as if alive.

A halberd intercepted her first slash. A tower shield caught the second. Twin sabers crossed before her third — and in the same breath, a dozen more weapons struck in return, each with precision honed to kill.

Eli’Erel flowed between them like water, spinning, bending, vanishing into shadow and reappearing in flashes of darkness — but she was slowing. The constructs didn’t falter, didn’t fatigue, and every clash sent another thread of strain through her movements.

Then one of the golden lances missed her on purpose.

She didn’t realize it until too late — until it punched into the ground behind her and detonated, the explosion catching her in the back and sending her tumbling forward toward him.

Alister stepped through the smoke, his massive form blotting out what little moonlight pierced the storm. Lightning still danced across his wings, casting his silhouette in a halo of crackling gold.

"You’ve grown complacent," he said, his voice deep, steady. "The abyss has made you arrogant."

Before she could reply, the molten ground at his feet surged upward, twisting into chains of pure light that lashed out, coiling around her limbs.

Eli’Erel snarled, shadows pouring from her body in a desperate tide to burn them away — but these constructs didn’t melt. The chains brightened, every link a sun, searing into the darkness with relentless heat.

And then, with a single pull, he dragged her toward him.

The storm howled. The rain hissed. And the golden light burned brighter than both.
