I Received System to Become Dragonborn

Chapter 1554: Twisted Trees

For the first time, Sylven felt that the plants were no longer his friends or his family. They felt like foreign creatures that he had never known before, despite the connection he had shared with them for so long.

The realization unsettled him more deeply than he wanted to admit. He had always believed that plants were different from other living beings.

They could be dangerous when threatened, but he had never thought of them as cruel and bloodthirsty like this. Yet the forest before him had deliberately manipulated two powerful creatures into fighting until they were too exhausted to resist.

Now it was preparing to devour them while one of them was still alive.

Sylven gritted his teeth. His young face hardened with anger, and despite being only fourteen years old there was a frightening expression. Anyone who saw him at that moment would have found it hard to see him as a normal youth.

His eyes contained a cold fury that did not belong on such a young face.

He stood completely still as the trees continued moving around him, his fists tightening as he watched them approach their prey.

The trees finally reached the two beasts. Without hesitation, they began to devour them.

Massive branches pierced into the body of the dead quadrupedal beast, thick roots forced their way through its wounds, some of the trunks bent down and split their skins open as strange mouths formed along their bark.

Jagged wooden teeth emerged between the cracks of their mouth before biting into flesh and tearing it away.

Other trees pushed their roots into the creature’s body and pulled pieces of flesh into the earth.

The black-scaled creature was still alive. It suddenly raised its head and released a terrible roar.

The sound echoed through the forest as the creature desperately tried to resist. Its claws dug into the ground while its wounded body struggled to move away, but it had already lost too much blood.

Several roots wrapped around its limbs and held it in place while thick branches pierced through its scales.

The trees showed no hesitation. They continued tearing into its body as more mouths opened along their trunks and branches.

Blood sprayed across the surrounding trees. Flesh was ripped apart. Scales cracked beneath the pressure of the roots.

The dying beast struggled again and again, but every attempt it made was clearly much weaker than the one before. Its enormous body trembled as the forest consumed it while it was still alive.

Its roar gradually became a strained growl and then a weak, broken sound before eventually disappearing altogether.

Sylven watched in silence. He could have intervened but by the time the beasts were already fighting, it was already too late.

The black-scaled creature had suffered too many injuries to survive for long even if Sylven managed to save it. Its body was already failing, and its wounds were so severe that it would likely die soon regardless of what he did.

Saving it would only delay the inevitable. At least this way, its suffering would end sooner.

That was what Sylven told himself as he remained where he stood.

But watching the creature being consumed alive made something inside him twist painfully. He had never seen plants behave with such hunger.

The trees did not just eat. They tore into the bodies with frightening greed, as though they had been starving for years and had finally been given a lot of food.

The forest became a scene of blood and destruction. Branches moved like arms, roots crawled, mouths opened and closed as flesh disappeared between their wood teeth.

The once peaceful clearing became almost unrecognizable.

It did not take long for the trees to finish devouring the two beasts. Their enormous bodies disappeared beneath the roots and branches until nothing remained except scattered blood, scales, and fragments of flesh across the ground.

The trees released low sounds that resembled deep sighs of satisfaction. Some of them creaked and groaned as though they had finally eaten their fill.

Their roots slowly withdrew from the clearing, their branches lowered. One by one, the trees dragged themselves back toward their original positions.

Their movements were much slower now, and looked almost satisfied.

Sylven finally could not take it anymore.

"Why did you do that?" He did not shout. Instead, he used his Magic to carry his voice through the forest, allowing every tree to hear him without needing to raise his voice.

"What else? We have to eat." One of the trees spoke. The voice sounded completely ordinary. There was no guilt or regret in it.

They did not understand why Sylven was angry. Other voices immediately followed from different parts of the forest.

"We were hungry."

"They were food."

"They entered our forest."

"They were strong."

"Strong creatures have more to eat."

The voices overlapped and echoed through the trees. Some of them sounded old, others sounded young. Some of them were deep and slow while others were soft, but they all carried the same disturbing indifference.

To them, what had happened was not cruelty. It was just feeding.

Sylven’s expression grew darker as he listened.

He didn’t bother saying anything else and immediately launched his attack. He poured his Magic into the forest and seized control of the plants around him, forcing the trees to move according to his will.

The trees suddenly buckled. Their trunks twisted in unnatural directions. Thick roots tore themselves from the earth, massive branches bent and coiled like struggling limbs.

The wood groaned under the pressure. Sharp cracks rang through the forest as their trunks began to split apart.

Splinters and chunks of bark flew through the air as the trees were slowly twisted and crushed by their own bodies.

Their branches thrashed wildly against one another, scraping across the ground and smashing into nearby trunks as though the entire forest had come alive in pain.

Screams echoed through the trees as the vegetation reacted to his Magic. It mixed with the deafening noise of snapping branches and breaking roots until the entire area seemed to tremble beneath the violence.

Leaves rained down from above when entire sections of the forest collapsed.

The ground shook whenever a massive trunk finally gave way and crashed down among the others.

Sylven continued without hesitation, tightening his control and forcing the trees to bend farther until their resistance disappeared beneath the overwhelming force of his Magic.
