I Received System to Become Dragonborn

Chapter 1496: The Landscape

After the four Dragonborn disappeared into the sky with their majestic wings spread wide, Caelion remained standing at the edge of the floating island for several more seconds.

His eyes lingered on the distant horizon until the four figures became nothing more than tiny specks before vanishing completely among the drifting clouds.

Only then did he slowly turn on his heels and walk back toward the group of soldiers waiting several dozen meters behind him.

As he approached, he immediately noticed the expressions frozen on their faces.

Every one of them still stared toward the eastern horizon. Several soldiers had their mouths hanging slightly open, while others simply stood motionless as though their minds had not processed what they had just witnessed.

Caelion couldn’t help smiling. A quiet snort escaped him.

"So," he said with amusement, "are all of you surprised?"

His voice finally snapped the soldiers back to reality.

They quickly turned toward him, but the shock was still clear across their faces. Judging from their expressions, that would not disappear anytime soon.

The oldest among them, a veteran who also served as the captain of the governor’s personal guard, took a hesitant step forward.

"My Lord Governor..." he began cautiously. "Who... no..." He swallowed before correcting himself. "What exactly are they?"

Caelion’s smile gradually faded.

For a moment, he looked toward the empty sky where the Dragonborn had disappeared.

"It’s better if you don’t ask," he answered quietly. "I’m not sure knowing the answer would do any of us any good."

The soldiers exchanged uncertain glances, but no one dared press the matter further. Their governor’s answer only made the mystery and danger surrounding the four strangers even greater.

Caelion slowly swept his gaze across each of them.

"We didn’t witness anything unusual today," he said calmly. "Is that understood?"

The captain immediately straightened. and he replied without hesitation. "No, my lord. We didn’t see anything."

The remaining soldiers nodded one after another.

Caelion gave a satisfied nod.

He trusted these men completely. They had served under him long before he became the Governor of Skyhold Bastion.

Together they had survived many campaigns, defended the island through years of conflict, and they were loyally at his side throughout his rise to power. If there was anyone he could rely on to keep today’s events secret, it was them.

Without another word, the group began walking back toward the city.

The towering walls of Skyhold Bastion gradually grew closer as they descended from the eastern cliffs.

Along the way, Caelion quietly issued a series of instructions. He ordered his captain to discreetly assemble trusted archivists and scholars, retrieve every historical document related to the Sky Tyrant from the restricted archives, and prepare formal requests for access to records held by neighboring governors and the royal library.

If he intended to keep his promise to the Dragonborn, the work had to begin immediately. He had a feeling that they would finish quicker than he expected.

Meanwhile, far above the endless sea of clouds, the journey east didn’t feel like a dangerous mission and more like an unexpected vacation for the four Dragonborn.

The wind rushed pleasantly past their faces as they soared through the open sky, their powerful wings carrying them effortlessly across the vast expanse.

There were no enemies pursuing them. Only blue skies stretching endlessly above drifting clouds.

Floating islands of every imaginable size passed beneath them one after another. Some of them were no larger than isolated hills crowned with a single tree. Other islands were enormous landmasses that supported forests, rivers, mountains, and some have bustling towns hidden among the greenery.

Massive waterfalls poured endlessly from their edges, transforming into shimmering streams that vanished into the clouds far below before anyone could see where the water truly went, or came from.

There were also many islands that floated freely through the sky, gently drifting with unseen currents, while others remained anchored together by colossal chains.

Ancient stone bridges stretched across long distances, connecting neighboring islands suspended thousands of meters above the abyss.

The wildlife also fascinated them just as much as the landscape. Most creatures seemed naturally adapted to a world without solid continents.

The birds looked far larger than those Erend and the other three had ever seen soared gracefully between the floating islands.

Some of those birds boast wingspans wide enough to rival a wyvern. Herds of winged deer bounded effortlessly from cliff to cliff using feathered limbs that allowed them to glide across open air before landing elegantly on distant patches of grass.

Even smaller animals possessed some form of wings or membrane, enabling them to navigate the endless skies that defined their world.

Occasionally, enormous creatures drifted lazily through the clouds below, they looked like living islands themselves.

Their broad backs supported patches of moss and miniature trees, while flocks of colorful birds nested peacefully upon them without fear.

"This place is incredible," Sylven said quietly, unable to hide the admiration in his voice.

"This is my first time seeing a world like this," Aesa added as she watched a flock of crystal-feathered birds shimmer beneath the sunlight.

Eccar laughed and said, "Right. Not every new world manages to surprise us."

Erend smiled as he looked across the magnificent sky surrounding them.

He had visited many worlds since becoming a Dragonborn, each stranger than the last.

But Elyndor still possessed a beauty unlike any place he had ever seen.

For a while, he allowed himself to forget the mission awaiting them ahead and simply enjoyed flying alongside his friends through one of the most breathtaking worlds they had ever encountered.

Their leisurely journey did not last much longer. Far ahead, the scenery gradually began to change.

The vibrant blue skies and lush floating islands slowly gave way to a far bleaker landscape. The floating islands became increasingly barren, the forests thinning until only dead, twisted trees remained.

The grass faded into dull gray, jagged cliffs rose like broken fangs from the earth.

Thick clouds gathered overhead, dimming the warm sunlight that had accompanied them throughout the flight.

Even the air felt heavier the closer they got, carrying traces of violent Magic and the faint scent of ash.

They had reached the frontier, the invisible boundary where civilization ended and the untamed wilderness began.
