The sound of heeled shoes crossing the lecture hall floor rang out low and clear.

She never bothered to discipline students who slept or messed around in her class, so on any given day only about half of them actually listened. Yet today, for whatever reason, not a single student was asleep or off in their own world.
That didn't mean they were paying attention either.
Most of them looked thoroughly distracted, glancing at the clock over and over or watching her face for cues.
