If this matter was to be decided by humans, they would probably gather all the evidence, keep it in their hands, and neither make it public nor conduct a trial. The person doing this would be able to firmly control the church for at least several decades.
However, Gray was a Lich. Liches did not understand compromise, nor did they understand so-called power schemes. Or rather, they disdained such schemes and preferred simple and direct methods instead.

"That’s impossible!" Darren IV almost burst into tears. He had never seen such a scene: "I am the only one here who is innocent. According to the rules, the Holy Father cannot single-handedly judge a cardinal!"
"Who told you that you are innocent?" Gray asked.
Darren IV was stunned.
Carl walked over to the pile of evidence and retrieved a wooden tray from it, on which lay a thick stack of letters: "This was found in the Holy Father’s residence."
Eyes widened, Darren IV stared blankly at the stack of letters, his face ashen.
