Book 5: Chapter 52 — The River of Souls
“So what’s going on?” Noah asked softly. “Is there something wrong with my body, is that why you’re here?”
No. Much as you are physically there and spiritually here, so am I. But the division of this place allows me certain divergent perspectives. I have concerns.
“What kind of concerns?”
After I became a part of you once again, I realized that there are three main parts of you, Noah. There is you. There is the Devourer. And there is me.
“I thought you were my humanity.”
That’s an oversimplification, but yes. I’m the undivided self that you run from. The one that thinks before we act. The one that considers consequences.
“I’m not that reckless.”
You are. It’s one of your greatest strengths, but it can’t be the only thing you are. The Devourer is fearless and implacable. Is that what you want to be?
“You should be,” the Devourer said with a grin. “It’d certainly make this whole process easier if I weren’t stuck out here. How am I supposed to teach you how to devour souls if I’m out here and you’re in there? It’ll feel more like showing off than mentoring.”
