Despite the joy swelling in her chest and the ecstasy that scorched through her veins like fire, Gloria shoved him away and sat upright, breathless and bewildered.
Rail opened his mouth to apologize, but she said nothing. Not a word.
"Gloria, please! Look at me!"
She couldn’t. Not because she didn’t long to see his beautiful, dangerous face, but because she knew if she did, she’d kiss him back. And she couldn’t afford to.
This wasn’t right. A human maiden couldn’t belong to a shifter. It was forbidden. Unthinkable.
She sprang to her feet and fled toward their cottage, each step a betrayal of her own heart.

"Hello... Gamma Rail?"
"Hey, Jace! How are you?" Rail grinned with effortless charm. "I’m just here to help your sister pack a few things for the carriage. You know, we’re leaving tomorrow."
