Chapter 98: A reunion with his father.
"I didn’t cheat!" she snapped, fury cutting through her sorrow. How ruthless this life reaper was! He might have left that post but his temper hadn’t changed yet.
"Then what’s the truth?"
Ren collapsed to her knees, the weight of everything pressing down so that she could no longer stand it. She hadn’t even had a moment to grieve.
"I’m Reneira D’Orient," she whispered.
Azrael crouched before her, tilting her chin up with two fingers. His voice softened, almost tender. "I was sincere too. But tell me the truth. The only one you can say."
Her eyes burned. "You were giving me hints this whole time. ’Is that what you want, Anarya?’ You knew. Deep down, I always felt it, this wasn’t what I wanted. This was my mother’s life, not mine."
He released her chin slowly, his expression utterly unreadable. "And your father?"
She drew in a shaky breath. "My father is a thief. A king who stole a Fae princess’s heart and carried her away to the human realm." Her voice grew sharper. "Tell me, Azrael, did he strike a deal with your father? Just like Seraphina’s father did?"
Azrael snapped his fingers. "The truth is told." He didn’t answer the question after that exclamation. But the answer was obvious and devastating.
