Chapter 43: We have you
"Your Grace, we are here so you can now get some rest," the healer suggested while Ren completely ignored Kai. She was still mad at him for how he reacted toward her good intentions, as though she were a killer. She wasn’t sure which was worse, being labeled a betrayer or seeing him in such distress, unable to cope with his pain.
"Take care of him for me!" His eyes were wet and innocent when he asked this of Ren, but she refused to look up. His gaze was already a temptation for forgiveness. He must be punished.
"Healer Rigo, let’s give him the remedy. Butler Siamon will soon bring food. We must wake him up."
The healer raised his brow, unsure why she was repeating what they had already discussed. When His Grace sighed and strode outside, he grasped the point.
Sitting next to the bed, Ren checked the pulse. It was still shallow due to blood loss. She removed the clean cloth, pursed her lips, and acknowledged, "He kept the wound clean and quenched the fever."
The healer beamed. "His Highness raised Org and Rail; they are not like everybody else."
Well, that could explain why he was so agitated last night, but why had he taken his frustration out on her?
"Org might be unable to use his right arm for a while. He was lucky the knife didn’t hit his lungs or a vital organ."
Agara had questions since leaving the Room of the Gone, but he had refrained from asking. Now, he could no longer hold back.
"How did you find out the wound didn’t kill him? We have strong senses, yet we couldn’t hear his pulse."
Ren smiled. "My physician master used to study bodies and always summoned me when it was about poison. Whatever I know, I owe him. Some poisons show symptoms, but some don’t. Some cause contractions, making others believe their loved ones are gone. The pulse decreases so much that it becomes almost impossible to feel."
