Once the matter was settled and the earliest train for tomorrow was not an option, they decided to take the one at ten in the morning. It wasn’t until after eleven at night that Lu Yichen called; he had gotten the tickets, but they were not together—five seat tickets and two sleeper berths. He had agreed, and also said he would come over to pick them up the next morning.

Grandmother got up at four in the morning to prepare their food for the train ride. She cooked a lot of tea eggs, a recipe taught by Luo Qiao.
She also fried potatoes and carrot shreds to put in lunch boxes, brought two bottles of mushroom meat sauce, and baked scallion pancakes for them to wrap and eat on the train.
