Afterward, the admission notices for Xu Shifan and his sister, Xu Yuqing, also arrived. As expected, they both got into Capital University, one studying accounting and the other finance.
Just as Luo Qiao had predicted, once their aunt learned of their residence, their grandmother and biological father had visited twice, probably hoping for some benefits. However, they found nothing in the yard except for a few pots and pans in the kitchen and the siblings’ meager bedding inside the house—it was pitifully shabby.
Perhaps feeling that there were no benefits to be gained, their visits ceased thereafter. Following this incident, the siblings’ relationship with their aunt grew somewhat distant.
Their aunt had come over to explain that she hadn’t intentionally disclosed their address to that side of the family, but Xu Shifan and Xu Yuqing didn’t believe a word she said.
Before the school term started, their aunt stopped visiting, and they were finally able to enjoy some peace. After that, they would come over occasionally to clean up but still lived in the two-entry courtyard house belonging to Luo Qiao.
After school began, they found tenants for the house, renting it to a family from out of town who had moved to the city for education. They reserved two rooms in the wing building for the Xu siblings to deal with the Xu family members and explained the situation to the tenants, asking them to help provide cover.
As days passed, Luo Qiao was helping her grandmother string up chili peppers in the yard one day. These were harvested by her grandfather from a plot of land in the forest and were too many to eat, so they strung them up to air dry under the eaves.
Hearing some noise at the front gate, she looked up to see Lu Yi Chen. His car was loaded with plenty of tender corn and pomegranates. Upon entering, he said with a smile, "Grandma, I came to see you."
Zhou Guifang continued working, "You say that, but you’re really here to bring something to that girl, aren’t you?"
Lu Yi Chen responded, "Grandma, don’t tease me. I was down in the countryside on a case today and saw someone selling pomegranates in their yard, so I bought some. I thought you might like them."
