Chapter 1973 - 1973: Number 1 in the Province (Part 3)
This year's exam is divided into liberal arts and science subjects. Liberal arts subjects include Chinese, politics, mathematics, and history/geography, while science subjects are Chinese, politics, mathematics, and science/physics. Those applying for foreign language majors have additional foreign language tests.
The exam lasts a total of two days, with half a day for each subject.
Four subjects total four hundred points. It's said that the Shanghai area finished the exams ten days early.
Although Xibao didn't apply for a foreign language major, he still took the foreign language test and found Xie Fei in the foreign language exam room. The two youngest ones in the exam exchanged a smile.
"Thank you, Lu Tianmao, your coat is really warm." After the exam ended, Xie Fei handed back the coat to Xibao, "These past two days, I haven't been cold while sleeping, while several youth in the same room as me took the exam while sick. You've given me a remarkable favor, we must have a meal together when we arrive at the Capital."
Lu's father and Cheng Baoguo waited outside the exam venue, walking over to the grandson upon seeing him.
Xibao took the coat from Xie Fei, turned around, and handed him the package Cheng Baoguo was carrying, "I'm looking forward to our gathering in the Capital, so make sure to take care of yourself to get that free meal. These are clothes my mom made for me, which I've worn out. I give them to you as a memento; when you wear them, you'll remember you owe me a meal."
Actually, it's Cheng Baoguo and Lu's father who brought into town the cotton clothes for him to replace. He noticed Xie Fei returned the military coat but still looked thinly dressed, and the weather was getting even colder, just like today's snowmelt which felt colder than during the snow, so he decided to gift them for Xie Fei to wear.
During this time, people wouldn't mind old clothes, as most were patch over patch, worn to the brink of disrepair.
Xie Fei's lips moved slightly, not knowing what to say.
Xibao directly unpacked the bag and draped an old cotton coat over him, stuffing the remaining items along with the bundle into his hand, "If you feel guilty accepting it, return a new set to me someday, trading old for new is a sure-win of great benefit, I won't lose out!"
"Thank you, Lu Tianmao." Xie Fei said in a low voice, keeping the gesture in his heart.
From the newspaper, he saw his grandfather had finally been exonerated. Maybe someday he could afford many new clothes, but at this very moment, these old clothes were heavy as Mount Tai, and were what he urgently needed.
Xibao waved his hand, "You're welcome, Xie Fei, we're going home now, goodbye!"
Lu's father and Cheng Baoguo remained silent throughout, but they supported their grandson's actions with praise.
"You should thank your mom!" Cheng Baoguo spoke as they headed to Zhao Anbang's house, "If it weren't for your mom making this leather coat for you, you wouldn't be kind enough to lend it to others."
Xibao nodded heavily, "I'll call my mom when we get to godfather's house."
Feng Qingxue received the call and couldn't help but smile, feeling proud of her son while saying, "You should also thank your Northeast Uncle Hu. He's been helping our family gather fur and ginseng treasures over the years, otherwise how would you have the leather coat to wear?"
"Mom, don't forget to say thanks for me."
"Don't worry, I've got things to send them."
On the day her eldest son took the college entrance exam, Feng Qingxue received another package of Northeast goods from old Hu, including dried wild pheasants and rabbits, silly roe deer, roasted pine nuts, hazelnuts and hickory nuts, dried black fungi, hazel mushrooms, monkey head mushrooms, canned red sausage, processed mink pelts, and a wooden box containing two Old Mountain Ginsengs of excellent appearance.
The goods were old Hu's own preparations, but the ginseng belonged to a family friend in urgent need of money.
