Chapter 1963 - 1963: Yunyang's Wedding (Part 3)
The bride, Feng Qingyun, dressed very appropriately today. She didn't wear the Golden-Silver Dragon-Phoenix Robe she brought back from Hong Kong. Instead, she donned a red blouse with a black skirt, her hair tied up, and without any makeup, her bright eyes and white teeth, snow-white skin, and rosy lips stood out. Her only accessory was a watch — a betrothal gift from the Rong Family — which matched the one Li Jiaoyang wore with his white shirt and black trousers.
The long-anticipated wedding went off without a hitch, and the smile never left Li Jiaoyang's face.
As the elder brother, Rong Yuan made a point to return for his younger brother's wedding, patting his brother's shoulder, "People say to establish family and career, and now you've finally established a family. I'm very happy. As for your career, you have to work hard and make sure you're not outdone by your wife."
Li Jiaoyang smiled slightly, "Rest assured, Brother, we already have our own plans."
Rong Yuan nodded, feeling very gratified.
His wife, Zheng Yun, wasn't very pleased, especially when seeing that Feng Qingyun's dowry and betrothal gifts far exceeded her own, even though the betrothal money and some gifts like the color TV were prepared by Li Jiaoyang himself, not by the Rong Family's elders.
Both with "Yun" in their names, the scale of the weddings was worlds apart.
Zheng Yun could almost predict how others would talk in the future, when comparing her to her sister-in-law, they'd surely mention how many betrothal gifts she received, how lavish her dowry was, and how beautiful she was, unlike herself, who had to be a military housewife to take care of two children, managing all the family matters and was exhausted every day.
Why was Feng Qingyun in the spotlight, while she remained in the shadows? Looking down at her hands, roughened by doing laundry, after the wedding, Zheng Yun directly proposed that her two children, one boy, and one girl, should live with her in-laws.
Hu Lan hadn't worked for many years, and even though Commander Rong had a considerable retirement pension each month, their living standards weren't much different from when he was in active service, mingling with high-ranking officials and living in spacious, comfortable accommodations with a rich and nutritious diet. The children could only lead comfortable lives with them and would never suffer, preventing the old couple from using their savings to support the second son.
Zheng Yun was very shrewd, calculating the situation to her advantage.
Commander Rong, retired now, didn't want to meddle in state affairs anymore, and having free time, he wished to enjoy time with his grandchildren and take the opportunity to teach the family's third generation. So, he didn't reject his eldest daughter-in-law's suggestion.
Zheng Yun was slightly satisfied, glancing at Feng Qingyun, who was seeing the guests off, and displayed a face full of pride.
Feng Qingyun was also a perceptive person who could instantly read Zheng Yun's thoughts. Didn't she just think that she and Li Jiaoyang had taken advantage? Perhaps she also had a sense of superiority since she bore a male heir for the Rong Family.
In most families, the eldest grandson is the most valued; many women in China who give birth to the first grandson feel they've done a great service to their husband's family.
"So what if it's a boy or a girl? Aren't they all the same? The world is divided into yin and yang, and one cannot exist without the other. I do not value boys over girls, nor girls over boys. I told Brother Jiaoyang we would leave it to fate." On the third day after the wedding, Feng Qingyun told her sister, "Sister, you have no idea how Brother Jiaoyang's eldest sister-in-law kept going on about her son, implying her son is the heir to the Rong Family. Her demeanor really makes one want to give her two slaps."
Feng Qingxue glanced at Li Jiaoyang and said sternly, "Why do you bother with her? You don't live together anyway. It's also because Jiaoyang tolerates you and lets you come back and talk nonsense."
