Feng Qingxue often bought dried goods, and Sister Lei was the person who knew her best.
Feng Qingxue replied with a smile, "My elder and children are visiting me, and I don’t know when exactly they’ll arrive. I need to prepare in advance and also borrow Dr. Guo’s house to stay. Even if the fruits and vegetables sit for a day or two, they won’t spoil. If they don’t come today, I’ll salt the fish and cook it when they do, so there’s no worry about waste."
Upon hearing this, Sister Cui, who sold fruit across from Sister Lei, said, "Bring them over some day to meet us. You’re so pretty and capable, your kids must be just as great."
"Sure, once they arrive, I’ll take them to buy groceries and you can meet them."
Laughing, Feng Qingxue left the grocery store and went home, hanging the net bag of fruit on the wall and putting the prepared ingredients into storage, soaking the dried goods. She then had a simple meal of white porridge with pickled cucumbers.
The pickled cucumbers were a gift from Sister Gu, crisp and refreshing, perfect for whetting her appetite.
She didn’t wait for a call from the base gate. Unable to resist the midday sun, she set out again to the dock to see if any boats had arrived.
