Chapter 193 - 0193 Preparing the Dowry 1_1
Because Lu Jiang was injured, and Feng Qingyun was staying at her aunt’s house, they first returned to the Wanglou Brigade.
Feng Qingxue had visited the Lu family’s new house several times after it was built whilst delivering food to Lu’s father. Seeing it now, she was still greatly satisfied.
The main house, made of clay brick, sat facing south. It was quite expansive with a reception room in the middle and two bedrooms on the east and west. Unlike other homes with no partitions, this house had walls made of bricks, with a door in each room about the height of a person.
On the outside, there were two rooms on either side with no partitions. The walls, too, were made of clay bricks, topped with thatched roofs. These served as places both for hosting guests and storing grain.
Both the main house and the side rooms were surrounded by a wall made of clay brick which was a little taller than a person. The wall was covered in a dense array of thorns that had been planted while the clay was still wet. A toilet was built at the point where the main household and the northwest room connected. To the south of the east room, leaning against the south wall of the east room and the courtyard wall, a kitchen was set up. The chimney leaned against the outside of the courtyard wall, and a large door was opened to the south of the courtyard wall.
Ever since the house was completed, no one had moved in. It was only tidied up by Lu’s father, along with the children, before they had left to pick up Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue.
Upon entering the house, Feng Qingxue noticed that not only were the doors and windows all mounted, but simple furnishings had also been put in place.
Under the middle hall, a long table was placed. On either side, two small cabinets supported the table. A square table with eight chairs was placed in the middle, with an old-fashioned wooden bed with a footrest in each of the two rooms. In the west room, there was only one wardrobe, while in the east room, there was a wardrobe and a set of high and low cabinets, with a dressing table under the window.
All the furniture was made of old elm wood, polished to be extremely smooth, its natural wood color untouched by paint.
Wang Zhengguo laughed, "Your uncle Lu and I used grain tickets or grain to exchange for old elm from the surrounding villages. Then, we asked a few old carpenters in the brigade for help, thus making these sets of furniture and doors and windows."
