Chapter 149 Regret
The wind roared past me as I plunged through the night sky in my wolf form. Cold air whipped through my fur, and the world blurred around me, but my silvery grey eyes stayed locked on the figure falling just ahead.
Ember.
Her body drifted helplessly through the air, her arms limp at her sides. Her head tilted back slightly, and her silver-white hair fanned out above her, catching the moonlight like strands of starlight. Her eyes were shut, and she was unconscious, completely unaware of what was happening.
Her bloodied clothes swayed slightly with the wind.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
I forced my limbs to move faster, pushing through the wind, fighting gravity with everything I had. If I could just get a little closer... I could catch her. I could pull her back and save her.
Suddenly, a faint blue shimmer appeared beneath her. At first, it looked like nothing more than light reflecting off water. But then it began to spin slowly at first, then faster, growing wider as it turned into a ring of glowing energy.
My eyes widened in horror.
The portal came to life with a low, electric hum. It crackled with magic, the air bending around it like heat rising off pavement. I knew that magic. Fae magic. It was an old and powerful one.
"No... no, no, no!"
I lunged forward, every muscle burning with effort. My front paws slashed at the air, desperate to close the final distance between us.
The portal’s glow lit up her face as she fell toward it. Then, without resistance, she slipped through. Her entire body vanished into the swirling light.
