Beneath the Alpha's Moon

Chapter 25: Nullified

LUCIAN'S POV

I clenched my jaw as I paced around the library for what felt like the hundredth time. It was the second day since Teresa had gone to visit her brother, and if Ares, didn't stop whining, I'd go mad.

"You could call her," Ares suggested, his voice dripping with irritation, as if I was personally torturing him by keeping us here.

"Or," I said aloud, "I could not. What part of 'no attachment' do you not understand?"

"She's our mate," he grumbled. "And we're going to die of longing if we don't see her soon."

That, unfortunately, was true. It felt like I'd been set on fire from the inside out since she left, but there was no chance I'd let Ares have the satisfaction of hearing that.

Still, my fingers itched to reach for my phone. Just one quick text to Juliette, and I'd know Teresa was safe. Normally, I would've just used the mind link—it's way more convenient and faster—but I wasn't in the mood for Juliette's relentless teasing. She had a knack for getting under my skin, and I didn't want that right now. But as my thumb hovered over the keypad, I let out a snort. I couldn't just ask her to come back; that would make me sound desperate. Instead, I crafted a cooler, more dismissive message:

"It's been far too long, Juliette, bring her back."

It was simple, subtle—she'd know she was on my mind without me admitting a thing. I allowed myself a smug smirk as I put the phone down. Naturally, a reply came within minutes but it wasn't on the phone but through the mind link.
