Chapter 73: The Upcoming War
The warm afternoon sun bathed the school grounds as Adam walked out of the nurse’s office, his mind clouded with thoughts.
The recent events had left him shaken, his emotions tangled in worry and frustration. He scanned the grounds for Ani but found no sign of her.
Desperation rising, he pulled his phone out of his pocket, his fingers trembling slightly as he unlocked it.
A notification popped up—a message from Ani. Opening it, he read:
"I’m heading home with my parents. If you’re looking for me at school, you won’t find me. I’ll talk to you in the evening."
Adam let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding, the tension in his chest easing ever so slightly.
Yet, unease lingered. He walked to the school gate and sat on its cold metal steps, his head bowed as he tried to process everything.
"Was I so reckless?" he muttered under his breath, his voice heavy with self-reproach.
"I let a vampire get so close to the people I care about, and I didn’t even notice. How could I let this happen?"
He ran a hand through his hair, his frustration mounting. The pieces of the puzzle seemed scattered, and no matter how hard he tried, they wouldn’t fit.
He whispered, almost to himself, "I thought everyone with powers would go at the same pace as me. But I was wrong. People are advancing rapidly, and I don’t even know what powers they have or how dangerous this city has become. And now, vampires..."
