Early in the morning, before dawn, the middle-aged man nestled in the small burrow used by the observation group members was awoken by the arguing noise from outside.
He was fluent in the common language of the Western Human World and even understood Sydney language. As for the Northern Kingdom’s Nuo language, he could comprehend it if spoken slowly... but he truly couldn’t handle the way those two outside were spouting it.
So, he got up, put on his coat, and under the watchful eyes of his group members, signaled that he was going out to see what was happening.
The member who woke up was an elderly man, Liang Zefu, who was a light sleeper. Seeing Zhang Sicheng’s gesture, he nodded.
Zhang Sicheng took a torch from the wall, lit it by the stove, then pushed open a small door, stepped through the heavy wooden door, and quickly closed it behind him—to prevent the cold air from entering the burrow, which would awaken several young members.
Zhang Sicheng and Liang Zefu, being older, were tasked with recording duties, while the young ones could still fight on the battlefield. Catching a cold from such incidents and thereby affecting data collection on Chaos would get him severely reprimanded by the group leader.
Walking past the trench corner, Zhang Sicheng noticed that the excavated space ahead was now fully packed with soldiers. Most were armed with revolvers or rifles, aiming forward, their commander... likely a regimental commander, stood before them. This dwarf, tilting his head up, snorted through his nose at his opponents: "His Excellency Malin just fell asleep an hour ago, and as the officer on duty for attending his needs, I don’t care who you are or what orders you have received, you cannot see him before he wakes."
"Captain! I order you to clear the way! Otherwise, I will execute you by military order!" The pointed-eared half-blood opposite him, a colonel, grimaced as he drew his revolver and cocked the hammer: "I give you one minute to reconsider!"
