The original professions are so powerful, yet there are very few who can ascend to become original professionals. For instance, to become a specialized mage, at least one of the spell formations needs to have an affinity of eight, and such mages cannot even learn other types of spell formations. Only those with affinities of eight in all six systems can become generalist mages, which are extremely rare. Any apprentice like this would receive special protection from the Mage Tower—as long as they could grow up, they would invariably become a Tower Master.
Malin couldn’t become a generalist mage, but of course, he was much better than a specialized mage. With affinities over eight in three systems, and one over seven, Malin was more than qualified to be a battle mage.
This is why some people drink magic potions to become wizards; doing so doesn’t require spell formation affinity and also bypasses the mage’s magic net, allowing them to draw the same power directly from the spiritual energy woven subspace.
They call themselves wizards, but in fact, they are only psychics. As they steal power from subspace, the Chaos power within the subspace transforms them step by step, until one day, an Evil God happens to discover this little thief in the subspace. The relationship between hunter and prey is then formed, and most wizards will eventually become followers of Chaos. This is also why the Churches and kingdoms are hunting wizards—potion formulas of this sequence are a forbidden path.
And this is only the difference between mages and wizards.
As for the brothers from the Sayer family, one is a Black Knight, and the other a perfect Knight, both Church deities’ original professions. In the Middle Ages, such knights were Paladins because they were the Church’s combat force. Unlike today’s Paladins, the current meaning of Paladin is—Bearer of Light.
