Chapter 156: Just Like This

Eli narrowly avoided collapsing into the bed and crushing Harper with his full weight. The release that gushed out of him was so powerful, so raw, that he felt as if he had poured his entire life into her. Or his very soul.
Which was perhaps exactly what happened, considering the soul-touching stir pulsating through every fiber of him right now.
In the ethereal bliss that followed, he pondered the shock he had never felt before. He had never doubted that spending this evening with her would be mindblowing — and it was, the wild pleasure making his head dizzy and his muscles weak and his breaths heaving — but in this very moment, the physical satisfaction was nothing compared to what was happening to his mind. He felt awash with a state of ... something so magnificent and subtle at the same time that he didn’t even know how to describe. Like a spell that stamped him somewhere deep inside, branding him with all the sensations from this moment and reshaping his soul around the etched mark that was her.
Like a missing piece of his existence clicking into place, finally making him whole.
Eli didn’t know how to process that feeling. It was far, far too different from what he could’ve imagined for even the best sex. So different that he wondered if this wasn’t just sex to begin with. Was it something more? Was it—
Harper stirred, breaking his dazed reverie. She had recovered enough from her own climax to be able to draw in a deep inhale against his shoulder now, and she nuzzled the crook of his neck, murmuring a soft sound that was like a cat’s languorous purr.
Eli pushed the puzzling question to the back of his mind, saving it for later thought. Carefully shifting his weight, he rolled his body aside and lay down next to her in the bed, keeping her cradled in his arms as he moved.
He could feel her own arms wrapping tighter around him at the same time, reluctant to leave even the tiniest space between their bodies. Her eyes fluttered open only after they settled snugly into the new position, and when her gaze met his, the misty light glowing from within was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen.
