Betrayed by Blood, Claimed by the Alpha

Chapter 93

Betrayed by Blood

Avery sat in the dimly lit library, her fingers tracing the spine of an old book. Her eyes scanned the words intently. A sigh escaped her lips; nothing here was helpful. She was curious, desperately wanting to know how to break the mate bond. She had a week left until her birthday, and she was concerned about what Cain wanted to do with her. Her gaze flickered to her burned hand, now wrapped in a small bandage. She remembered how Cain had carefully helped her clean it, even though she had refused his help.

His actions confused her greatly, and she wasn’t sure what he wanted with her anymore, so she found herself in the pack’s library.

She had begged the attendant to allow her in, even though it was late at night. She wanted to know exactly what it would mean if their bond was broken and if she could do it.

Avery’s gaze flickered over the writing. None of it was making sense, and instead, it was just confusing her more. She paused, leaning back against the chair, a tired sigh escaping her lips.

She heard footsteps behind her and froze, quickly pushing the book off the table. She turned to see who it was, only to find Selena.

The other came forward, her eyebrows furrowed slightly. In her hands was a book too. "You’re here so late at night?" She whispered, making her way to Avery’s side.

Avery nodded. "I wanted to check something out," she replied, her gaze falling to the book Selena held. "I didn’t know you come here," she said. The other shrugged, taking a seat next to Avery.

"I came to return this. Dan was kind enough to let me borrow it for a day. I promised I wouldn’t let anything happen to it," she whispered back, her gaze flickering to the book Avery was trying to hide. Her eyebrows furrowed as she read the title.

"Avery," she muttered, shifting her gaze back to Avery, who shifted uncomfortably in her seat. "Are you... Have you found your mate? Do you want to break your bond?" She asked, her gaze piercing into Avery, almost like she could read her soul.

Avery let out a nervous laugh, waving her off dismissively. "Me? I doubt the goddess has a mate in store for me. I just... I was curious after the conversation we had, and since I was hired and had no tasks left for today, I thought I could read some more about it," she said with enough conviction, hoping Selena would buy it.
