Mythran's Master Of All

Chapter 524 - Into The Breach

“Okay, you lot.” The platoon captain said to a small group of guys after his unit had deployed the first moat-crossing bridge. “Do your job.”

The small group of Adventurers nodded and stepped out of the troop's formation. The fighter pat their powerful magic user on the back.

“Go for it, Dennis.”

“Are you sure about this, Chris?” Dennis asked. “Doesn't this seem a little off to you?”

“Hey, who are we to decide who's right and who's wrong in a land dispute?” Chris asked. “We're being paid a lot of money to bring part of that wall down, so go do it.”

“It's just that... he must have paid a lot of money to build that thing...”

“So what? It's not our fault he wasted his money.” Chris said. “Make us proud.”

Dennis nodded and stepped ahead of the group. Since he was a magic user, he didn't carry any weapons openly or wear protective armor. He always felt sorely unprotected when they went on quests. His party kept their promise and protected him, more than he thought they would, even at their own detriment. They had told him a magic user was the most important part of the party, so he had chosen that class for them.

Dennis walked across the moat-crossing bridge, and he could swear the 24 foot tall muscle men designs on the walls were looking at him. He instinctively held his hands out in a submissive gesture, and the prickling feeling he had on the back of his neck eased. He made it across the moat and stood about 10 feet away from one of the muscle men designs that he now saw was actually half of a statue.

Dennis has seen the wall was covered in a magic shimmer, so he knew it was protected by a spell of some kind. With his hands still up in a submissive gesture, he cast Dispel Magic. A 40 foot wide section of the wall stopped glowing, as did three of the statues in front of him. He turned to the right and cast the spell, then turned to the left and cast it again. He had cleared 120 feet of the wall and unknowingly disabled 6 more statues, for a total of 9.

Dennis looked back at the wall and saw it still had a magic shimmer, so he cast Dispel Magic again. A section of the Iron Wall disappeared to reveal the solid dirt wall underneath.

Geezus Cripes! Dennis thought, shocked. He looked to the right and then to the left. The wall itself is cast with spells!

With that knowledge, Dennis knew that this barrier would be no match to any seasoned magic user or anyone with a special, and probably very expensive, spell scroll like the one he had. He took out the scroll from his inventory and unrolled it, then started to read. He felt a ripple in the magic nearby, then no less than 2 dozen of the closest 24 foot tall statues stepped away from the wall and drew their swords.

“Hurry up and Fire!” Chris said to the troops behind him, and hundreds of arrows pelted the animated statues. Of course, this got their attention and the attention of another 40 statues on that part of the wall. Dennis didn't stop reading, because Chris had told him to keep going no matter what happened. When he was done, a wide cone of Disintegration emanated out from him and carved a huge 80 foot wide swath through the exposed wall and destroyed 6 of the statues he had already disabled. He stared at the destruction he had unleashed, then turned to look at his party.

“Don't just stand there!” Chris said and dodged a huge metal blade. “Give us a hand!”

“Right!” Dennis said and started to cast Dispel Magic on the statues. It was burning through his Mana quickly, but the statues were so big that he was hitting two and three of them with each spell. Most fell over because they were in mid-stride or mid-swing, and then the other animated statues saw their fellow's fall. When they realized that Dennis was the biggest danger to the county, they turned almost as one towards him.

“AHHH!” Dennis yelled. “HELP!”

“Don't be stupid! Keep casting!” Chris said and tried to trip the closest statue with a spear. It broke under the pressure and the 24 foot tall statue almost stepped on him.

“CHRIS!” Dennis yelled.

“Hail Mary!” Chris said and started to run away. “Do your Hail Mary!”

“Dammit.” Dennis said, because he always hated this part. He quickly ran around to get as many of the statues after him as possible, then curled up into a ball and came to a stop.

“GET BACK!” Chris yelled just in time, because one of the swords of the animated statues swung down towards Dennis. There was a blinding light for a moment, and then everything went silent. Dennis felt a hand on his shoulder, so he uncurled from the ball and looked up at his party.

“See? I told you the magic user was the important part of the party.” Chris said, and helped Dennis stand up. There were cheers and hollers from the troops around them, because all of the statues had been petrified and turned to stone. The troops deployed more moat-crossing bridges and started to cross them to enter the now completely undefended breach in the county's wall.

“Did you copy that spell scroll Lord Grasham gave you?” One of the others asked.

“Of course.” Dennis said. “I used my special ability to store it in my spell book.”

“Sweet.” Chris said as Lord Grasham's troops poured through the breached wall. “We're going to have a much easier time with a lot of things with that spell at our disposal.”

“Yeah.” Dennis said and looked at the 80 foot hole he had made in the wall and all of the frozen animated statues. “Easy.”

Chris laughed and pat his shoulder. “Don't worry, we won't have to do things like this again for a while.” He said. “The money we're getting for this is crazy.”

“Good work.” The platoon captain said as he walked over to the group of Adventurers they had hired. He took out a large bag of gold and held it out. “You definitely earned this and the extra bonus inside.”

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

“Thank you.” Chris said as he accepted the gold. The platoon captain ran to catch up with his troops and the party of Adventurers received a popup.
